I was pretty much stumped when I saw the Balance challenge, until I remembered that the circus just happened to be in town this week. I lugged the Rebel with me, hoping to get some earth-shattering picture of a tightrope walker or something, but alas, this was the only good one I got out of the trip. I like it, regardless :)

Substantial post processing.. cloned out some dimly lit bleachers in the background and a string of lights in the upper right corner. Lots of burning/dodging on the guys' uniforms and their poles to bring out the colors a little more. Also some minor cropping, USM, brightness/contrast, etc.

From the critique club:
You did well in capturing the moment. Of course, you are at the mercy of the shows lighting and you have no say so in the posing, yet you brought home a very interesting study. This picture fits the challenge for this is a true balancing act.
There is a lot of color in the performers' costume and the eyes bend over backwards to see it, but we are left only with a strong sense, wishing we could see more detail. There is a lot of distance, but how else can you include the entire view. Well, this is always a cardinal consideration and the most vexing decision. If we show it all, we lose intimate detail.
To conclude the image is very nice and worth keeping. Ending at 5.6 is a respectable finish: you know not great, but by all means very far from the cellar. Greatness is measured in competition, yet it is more important how we feel about it. We all have material that we are pleased with, but we know that it lacks certain traits, but all the same we are pleased with it. Yet, I would be proud to show this image on my port because it is a well taken picture of the moment.

It is a strong composition because the three figures form a triangle which climbs up, up and that is the major strength of this picture, this at the price of detail.

I think you did fine and the angle is interesting. All the extras that come with the image are much part of the environment and like we said, there is not much we can do about it. We can say for certain that the image has not only balance but scope as well.

I love a circus! Beautiful shot, with nice lighting and shadows. I'm wishing I didn't have to see the light in back; that's my one little nit.
