 This is picture from Hot Spring Area on Reykjanestá, it is about 1km from Reykjanesviti. Take turn on the roadsign Gunnuhver.
On this small visseble area(about 1 square kilometer, most of it is not visseble) is lot of steam and mud springs. Most famous af them are cooled down now. Ip you want the GPS location then it is N 63°49.150', V 022°40.932'. Just one more useless info about this shot :)

Did some crop, curves, contrast, hue/sat and levels

ps. The only I did think about when I knew what Desolation meaning was this. I just was stuck in my head so I drove to this place 2 times (about 1 hour) and take shot´s. Too much rain in my first trip :P And belive my, this Hot Spring area got pretty BAD smell

Good subject although the steam (?) cuts into the image IMO. I also don't like the line border around the image. - 6

good one, must be Iceland...very cool, in despite the green green grass maybe?
- that's not very desolated is it?

What is this a picture of?? I first thought it was lava (because of the steam) but now I'm stumped! Great picture all the same!!

I like the colors and the smoke. This is certainly a desolate place. Seems a bit pixelated.

A nice example of an image with lots of colour and yet certainly desolate.
Though simple I really don't like the border choice here.

I thought that the green in the background destroyed the feeling of desolation, however, I played with the image in PS and removed the green and it really enhance its feeling.
