If so, you did a terrific job of eliminating glare.) Iâd like to see a stronger use of the negative space, but Iâm not sure what to suggest. Itâs been a difficult week for voting, mainly due to my wildly subjective interpretations of the challenge. Attractive photo, though, in any case! 7 | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 09/19/2002 05:24:00 AM | Cowspaceby RemieComment: There are many shots this week of a subject near the lower region of the image with oceans of background. To me, many of these lack a creative or interesting use of that space. In this photo, however, I see a whimsical punch line, cleverly done. The open sky is a comic yarn leading the viewer to a resolution of three cows. Mildly absurdist, it reminds me of the smartly mysterious philosophy in Douglas Adamsâ âSo Long, and Thanks For All The Fish,â with a smack of Gary Larson for good measure. Great shot! Iâm glad you waited for the last cow to look straight at the camera. 9 |
| 09/20/2002 08:19:00 AM | alienby snowComment: Very interesting! Curious how you did this (is it a reflection?). The negative space here is cloudy and uncertain, which adds tremendously to the eerie manifestation of this "alien". It is like the best of the famous shots of Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster, which are always *just* blurry enough to convince some and frustrate others. This photo holds my attention again and again. 8 |
| 09/20/2002 08:13:00 AM | Boxed Inby siggithorComment: Very good use of negative space, mainly because of the framing. This baby looks precisely as the title suggests, and the background clamps in with strong polygons. Effectively claustrophobic! I would like to see a broader contrast range in the baby. 8 |
| 09/20/2002 03:06:00 AM | bird on a wireby FranziskaLangComment: The parallel lines divide this photo wonderfully, and the placement of the bird is great! Very nicely composed. The negative space emphasizes the unobtainable character of the bird, because it is framed high in the upper left, and the background is all sky. 8 | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 09/19/2002 05:07:00 AM | Silenceby jkiolbasaComment: Sometimes art is what the viewer brings to it, which may or may not coincide with the artist's intention. To me, this picture could be cover art for the movie "Lenny," a biopic about the late Lenny Bruce, seminal standup comedian "who broke boundaries of language and subject matter by questioning hypocrisy and telling it hilariously like he saw it" (Amazon summary). His story is comedy with a tragic lining, as it ended in a morphine overdose. Much of his career was a joyous but frenzied rebellion against censorship. For these two reasons, the abandoned microphone represents (to me) a poignant homage. Since our culture reads left-to-right, the microphoneâs placement invites the eye and emphasizes the negative space to its left -- a void aching for a voice. This photo both meets the challenge and moves me emotionally. 10 |
| 09/20/2002 08:08:00 AM | blueby ramoneComment: To me, more than anything, this is a beautiful swash of abstract color. The shot is well composed, and the negative space is a gorgeous gradient blue that highlights the orange. The spaces between the light bulb wire are interesting and want to tooth into the ferris wheel like gears. 10 |

| 09/12/2002 07:31:00 AM | Boscs and Gourdby mcmurmaComment: The color tone here is gorgeous. This bronze is evocative of Old World richness (think exquisite still life paintings, a hint of parchment from Da Vinci), so this is not only a beautiful photograph, but something that takes me into another time. Nice framing, good repetition of curves and speckling, nice balance in the pears' stems -- the whole composure keeps the eye happily roving over the sumptuous shapes. I am hanging between 9 and 10 on this one. Only things that would keep it from being perfect, to me, are the few blemishes on the gourd. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
