A good attempt at a still life though for me I would prefer the focus point on the edge of the apple to define it more sharply from the background also the dark background corner of the plate is a little distracting

This guy does have a great smile and I can see why it would be contagious -- he also has a beard :) Side lighting can be very dramatic but here it's a bit strong. I also wish the background was different -- both the line and the speckles are distracting. Mostly, I wish you had found a different perspective. I don't think shooting up at a person is effective very often.
