I gave this an 8 but I didn't think this entry would do as well as it did mainly because it doesn't have enough depth of field for the top of the bottle and it stood out to me as a flaw and I was wondering what the reasoning for this was. It looks like the majority of people liked it and that is all that matters. Congratulations!
Just read your description. I guess having those FlexTT5 pocketwizards which allow you to shoot with high-speed sync would have solved your depth of field problem yet giving you sharp splashes.

Absolutely true, but I wanted the back edge of the table to be blurred as much as possible. And when I looked at the shot on the camera display it seemed to be enough DOF for the bottle. Reshooting was no ootion timewise.

Oliver, very high quality photo as usual. Congratulations on the ribbon!
As for the DoF debate, the top of the bottle being out of focus did not bother me: in fact, I liked it, because it puts the emphasis even more on the splash's sharpness.
In order to obtain everything in focus, obviously, composing 2 exposures would work, as you explained. Just wondering: why didn't you simply raised the ISO, especially with a 5D2? This would have allowed for a narrower aperture, wouldn't it? |

oooh!! Thanks for the explanation! I'm reading the speedlighter's handbook, and I just read the part about higher output = longer duration. But I hadn't put it together with equaling more blur (I haven't experimented that much, yet...) What a wonderful nugget of info!
Great shot! I didn't notice/care about the bottle top. :D
Congrats on the red!! |

Anyway - good work as always - at least the splash is in focus. One of these days you will get a hang of studio stuff ;-P |
No need for excuses, peter, I knew it would be noticed when I submitted. Regarding the studio stuff - ahem, that's what I make a living from, so if I ever got the hang (I doubt that), I would still have to do it ;-) |

This is technically very good, you've lit it well, given it an interesting background, and frozen the water droplets completely! the one thing my eye is drawn to however is the out of focus tip of the bottle. |

Come back to say that I'm pretty sure this will ribbon. Great photo, if there was a label on the bottle the company would buy it lol :P
I think the tilt here works as well, something I would never think of doing.
This looks a bit like the work of h2 or maybe hahn23 |
