I like your thought behind this photo. The filled frame is good. HOwever, the photo itself just doesn't have much pop. Here are some suggestions I have:
* It looks like you used on camera flash, which is causing some very harsh shadows. With a still subject like this, I would haver rather seen a tripod and long shutter used.
* The contrast and saturation both seem a bit low. Try increasing them slightly.

Perhaps if you wet the shells it would have brought out more color, or done more with the lighting.

I like your idea, but the lighting is a bit flat and drab in this.

the lighting in this shot could be greatly improved.

Comes off quite flat to me, but I think this has some good potential with some adjustments. I did a screen grab and popped this into PSP to see. A quick adjustment of levels (there is a big flat spot on the high end of the histogram), some saturation and a touch of clarify brought out some nice detail and pop.
