Lot of elaborate setups for me lately, teaching myself how to solve lighting/studio problems. I tried to do this myself with the timer at first, but it was too difficult. I did something similar to this in the frame challenge, but this came out more 3D because of the hand crossing the frame and I also did a better job with the lighting. Piece of leftover cement board with glue splattered on it. Chiseled out the hole the size of the frame that is balanced on a hunk of metal at the top of the hole. The board is clamped to a 'stick in a can' and resting on a makeshift table. Background is a white piece of paper with bump in it and a small hole for the dried coneflower. One strobe, with a large softbox for the wall/frame and shadow on the right. One strobe below, aimed at my hand and the flower and one strobe behind the 'wall' for the background and for backlighting the arm. This was a really fun challenge!! I don't think I even deserved 15th place, there were so many great entries. Thanks go out to my lovely assistant and wife for her patience in getting my arm/hand positioned like I wanted it and keeping my equipment clean by clicking the shutter, to all the great dpc people that left comments and of courseā€¦the fine people at log cabin syrup.

Well done

Unusual, I like the tension in the arm and I really like the (honey?) dripping from the - uhm - weed. The frame/illusion is an okay touch but may be a bit too gimmicky.

Surreal. Had to come back to boost it a point.

6 - It is odd, but not pushed to the extreme it needs to be, in my opinion. What I get of the concept, I don't personally find appealing.

Sick! A brilliant idea, very well executed! Like the lean of the background. Just helps pull me to the flower. Can't wait to see the setup details. So please include them for me. Yeah, I am curious. Was the flower glued to the table? Or is it actually through the table top. Oh and what about the drip?
Excellent!

This really grabs you, odd, gritty and intriguing and very well executed

Is it fine art? I don't know. My definition is: a photograph that says something about the photographer, that deeply impresses him/her and thereby moves the viewer, that connects with the viewer in a way that wasn't expected, that has a story to tell about the photographer in an oblique metaphor that might seem at once impenetrable and accessible, that is not obvious in technique, that shows who the photographer is, that shows the photographer is in there somewhere, invested in the imagery. There are a few issues with technicals that are largely unimportant, and you are a talented photographer, and this is doing well; but what does it mean to you, really?

Clever, interesting and technically way beyond my skills, but does not scream 'art' to me. Still, has to have a good score because that is too subjective to criticise on.

This says lutchenko to me.... I don't know why... It does just.

I'm really liking the involved set-up and the thinking behind the idea but I think going down this route, in order to preserve your 'picture' illusion has meant that there is only some much drama and interest in the lighting. The clever execution will certainly get you some votes but I think shooting the hand, thistle and goo against black with no frame and more interesting targeted low-key lighting might have made for a better image.

Having said all that, I can appreciate the work here. 7.

What a wonderful imaginative idea! I think it would have worked better to have the forearm a little dirtier as well though.

Original approach and very well executed. Somehow I really don't want to know what's the drip coming out of the flower :D

i'm giving this one a high score...i can't even tell if i like it, but there is something about it that has me so intrigued- and i think that's a pretty good quality in any art piece 9
