This is USMC Sgt. Widman. He is a CH-53E crew chief with HMH-361 Flying Tigers out of Miramar California. These crew chiefs are responsible for ensuring all personnel and cargo that is taken in these aircraft are secured tightly to the floor, doing weapons checks, providing rear/side visibility to the pilots, and much more. They are very good at what they do and I have a new found respect for this job, it is a lot of work and they do it fast and efficiently. Taken on my trip with the squadron to provide supplies to the Marines stationed at some of the FOBs in southern Afghanistan.

If you do not agree with photo because of your beliefs on the war, do not post a comment that stirs up debates and heated discussions. Thank you

Wow.. my son flies the Super Stallion (super shitter). I may have to order him a print of this and give to him once he returns from deployment.

Grats on the high finish, but I think it would have done better in an open challenge. The light is about the fifth best thing in this shot. The subject matter is very interesting and the framing, focus and use of the rule of thirds is perfect. Dense, compelling and very well done.

Cory! Wow! I am so looking forward to the upcoming months then! This is such a great photo. Photojournalism at its best. This is a perspective on the pressures and "real life" parts of our troops' jobs that we don't often get to see. I can't even begin to tell you and everyone else serving in our military how much I appreciate the work you do!!

Congratulations on an honorable mention. This is such a great addition to your portfolio. Can't wait to see more!

It does appear that way! As Joe McNally says "If you want to take more interesting pictures, get your camera in more interesting places!" Take good care of yourself over there. We are all thinking about you guys/gals and thankful for what you do for us. I like that you can use your camera to make beautiful images there - probably makes being away more bearable.

A practical demonstration of back lighting and how to control it. Every detail is well exposed and highlights are absent demonstrating the author knows well how to properly use ambient light to the maximum effect. Well done.

wow. that looks intensely real. exciting perspective position for the camera. Nicely composed as a shot. My first thought isn't lighting, but the lighting in the shot is good :)
