the background seems to overwhelm the dog, the eyes on the dog seem to be lit up by a direct flash, and the image seems to have a strange focal point - overall, the circles of light used here are a huge distraction from a potentially nice shot of the dog |

Lack of focus on your subject hurts this. The concept is good, but some way to go with the technicals. Looks like you may have converted to B&W because the dog is suffering from 'green eye' - one way to overcome that is to have the flash off-camera. I also wonder if the composition could be improved by adopting a higher viewpoint. as it is the viewer is looking up at the dog, which is slightly intimidating, and uncomfortable - you may want to explore taking portraits at eye level. Keep practicing. |

Gus is out of focus! I'm not a huge fan of B&W but you definettly did a great job with the bokeh! |

This is one of the few good photos that show bokeh. There are so many OOF backgrounds in this challenge that do not meet the term bokeh. Yours does and the face of the dog is in good focus. I know you have to operate with a shallow DOF that causes the rest of the dog to be OOF. Did you try this in color?? 8 |

Looks like flash reflected in his eyes; I try to bounce flash with animals because even a diffuser won't eliminate that weird look in the eyes. The bokeh is a bit overwhelming, like it's slowly absorbing him into itself. |
