So I went to Roma. Had a most excellent adventure. Entered three challenges with shots from what is probably one of the most scenic, photogenic cities in the world. Two have finished below 6 and this one sits today at 5.8 (up from a 5.7 a day or so ago!) and will likely also finish below 6.
I do like this shot. I like the way it's composed, I like my somewhat not-my-normal-style of editing. I actually did think it would have a fair amount of DPC appeal. Now a 5.8 is not a bad score - not at all - but when one goes to Rome, and can't get a score above a 6, one gets a bit disheartened. One thinks it would have been better to have entered something quirky and unappealing and happily enjoyed a 5.2 or so. Methinks there is a lesson in here somewhere.

And lest you wonder, kind viewer, if the lesson is directed toward voters, it is not. The voters are always right. It is the photographer that needs to learn the lesson, if she could only figure out what it is...

One commenter mentioned that something doesn't seem quite right. I think it may be that the shot is not balanced. Too heavy on the left, not enough to offset that on the right. Not the crop that did that (only a minor crop, if I recall) - it was the dork behind the viewfinder at the time. I'll have a chat with her. It could also be that I did a wee bit of perspective correction (shot at the wide end of the wide angle lens) but I think it's the balance thing. That, and other than the history on display, it might be kinda boring in general. Heh - I'd say "live and learn" but I'm woefully ignorant on the whole "learn" thing. Any and all advice would be most gratefully accepted.

You may, dear reader, think this is all much ado about nothing. You are very probably right. And if you've read this far, all two of you, you get a cookie.
At 150 votes, I'm sitting at 6.0067. Yes, holding onto that precious 6! Why is it such a big deal? I looked through the past year or so - I've been able to get scores in the 6's (sometimes with even a digit greater than 0 after the decimal!) about 3 out of 10 challenges or so. Lately it's been maybe 1 out of 10. So I'm wondering what it is I've quit doing right or started doing wrong. And yes, I spend WAY too much time obsessing over all of this.

Wonderful shot - love the crazy eclectic bit's of building lying around (and standing up) - delighted it got above that magic line for you. O fcourse if you had gone with the commentaters vorte instead it would have been even better :- )
By the way - you were offering two cookies for the two people that read the whole story - I notice Roz has dibs on one so can I have the other ? |

and secondly .. if you think you're obsessed then you should be a fly on the wall where i live ..!! .. maybe we should start a club .. "the slightly annoyed (that's being nice!) with the voters club" .. i know quite a few ppl who would join ..:) |

hey deb .. i just now opened pik your fav pic thread and noticed this .. it literally jumped out at me . then i saw your name . i was surprised because i thought it looked different from your usual work .. the processing for one and the scene for two ..
on opening i could see it had been entered in the last free study and scrolled down expecting to see a 6.8 or something even more .. i was quite surprised to see 6.08 .. i then started reading your comments .
i must quote you on this because i've actually said the very same thing .. that if my photograph doesnt score well then its not the voters fault but mine for not satisfying their requirements sort'v or not anticipating them in a way ..

so i had to laugh when i read that ... especially the bit about trying to figure out wot they actually want ..
anyway .. i think this is just brilliant .. its a fantastic photograph and you've given it a wonderful gritty process .. definitely a WOW in my book .. :)

See? This is why I'm intimidated to enter challenges much anymore. If this gets barely a 6.0, I couldn't possibly turn out anything better or half as good!
It's stunning! Your processing on a beautiful photo makes it even more exotically beautiful!

I was intrigued to find which shot was your and leave you a more detailed comment, so here goes :)
I really like the low pov looking up through the forum, I think it's the pillar in the foreground that I don't like being cropped, I kinda keep looking at it rather than the rest of the great scene.
I do like the composition of the rest of the buildings, the diagonals lead you nicely to the central churchy thing!
As Brian mentioned the sky could do with being a bit punchier by creating another "exposure" and blending them on (assuming you use photoshop of course!)
I do like the rest of the processing you've done vs the original, much more impact, but maybe just a slight increase in colours would add even more punch I think.
Great job beating the 6 barrier, it's always my main aim in a challenge :) Oh, and Rome is awesome, spent a hectic long weekend there a couple of years ago, so much to see |

| Deb, I believe if you had darkened the shy to be more menacing,this would have created a greater contrast with the forground, then with dodge and burn on the grey stones to seperate them from the sandstone, this would have brought to life what you REALLY captured thru the lens to fit the title. so much potential. |
