This was taken in the most deplorable slums I have been in since I started going to the Philippines.

This little girl is actually captured in a candid pose. She was looking at me through the vents in the wall as I was taking pictures of other children. I snuck around and sneaked this shot. She was so shy. Eventually her family came around and I got some great shots of the kids.

The place was dark and stank like hell.

She looked like a rose in the middle of the hell.

Excellent work, Enzo. You handled this whole thing very sensitively.

you see the most horrific and soul destroying conditions in your travels enzo .. this photograph brings tears to my eyes .. i wonder wot that little girl is going thru day to day and wot her future holds .. the sadness of the human condition could not be better told than in your photographs .. seeing an image such as this makes me appreciate the positives in my own life so much more .. no man is really an island .. we are all responsible for this little girl's plight .. :)

I'm not crazy about selective desat, but I'm trying to be open-minded. She is so small in the picture that it does seem subtle, more subtle than one would think a rose in the desert would be. The composition is great otherwise. I'm going to look the other way this time! ;)

An aesthetically pleasing shot that says more "poverty" to me than abandoned. The very fact that there is a person here, not to mention that it seems pretty well maintained for all its apparent run-down, isn't strong on the challenge theme.

Powerful image. I'm not a big fan of selective desat, but I've seen worse applications of it.

Very difficult to truly grasp the terrible living conditions these people face daily. Abandoned by their government, or merely just the way of life?

I like the place you have chosen but the girl and the outfit and her placement just ruins it for me. I would have left her out. I am a big fan of adding a human element to certain photos, in this case not so much. No vote just comments

I like what you've done with the color. The shadows, lighting, and depth are great. I think the only change I would suggest is the really dark area towards the back (right of center), maybe bring out a little detail there. Just my opinion though. I really like the feel of this picture.

Powerful. Perfect use of selective desat to emphasize your subject/title. A top pick. PS love the handprint too.

I like the handprint on the wall, makes the slum feel very cave-ish. Nice editing with the colors, love her pink dress standing out.
