I never realized that suger is so difficult to photograph and I don’t know if I’ve succeeded in making it look good
I’m really looking forward to seeing what the others in the challenge have come up with.

Post challenge:
Thanks for a wonderful score, great, helpful comments and for the ribbon!!.
Enzo hotpasta and dragonballzfsr mentioned the OOF corner of sugar at the front of the cube. That bothered me as well. The problem was, I REALLY wanted to get the tiny drop of coffee/sugar that run underneath the spoon when I tilted it slightly forward.
I focussed manually each time, then tipped the spoon forward and had about a ½ second to catch the drop which run under the spoon and dropped off immediately. This meant that when I tipped the spoon I didn’t have time to re-focus and the front edge of the suger slid out of the focus range.
I took loads and loads of shots (in some everything was in focus but the drop had slid off or didn’t look the way I wanted it). I chose this one because the drop is actually touching the coffee surface.
Thanks again.

Fantastic image and worthy of the ribbon it(you) earned. I have a different take on your OOF concerns. Like all good macro photography, what you intended to have in crisp focus was in crisp focus, that being the drop of the bottom of the spoon and its amazing reflection in on the surface of the coffee. The texture of the sugar toward the rear of the cube really completes the the image. So, while you see this as an f16 photo with a slight focus problem, I see it as a perfectly composed f2 macro shot. My favorite in the challenge for sure...

Would you please visit a retail photo-booth and post an image of yourself giving your viewfinder a rest. Maybe your other :-) half has some kodak moments of you asleep; better yet, capturing your gaze as a water droplet exits the bath faucet.

Always an enjoyment and learning observing your work. Keep them coming! -K

[quote=FocusPoint] (Oh noooo... the hat losing it's power... need to charge it)

Hey Irene, put your hat on and go someplace sunny... *that should do for a while*

I think I will call you "Macro Irene" until you have a ribbon with a landscape or something LOL

Good job (I feel dirty when I say this, but it is a nice photo...

LOL! You're welcome to call me Macro Irene - I've been called worse ;-D
And as for your evil dpc hat ways..... It took me a couple of days but I now have the hat completely in my power.... it even suits me (I think ;-)

You mentioned that photographing sugar was more difficult than you anticipated. I agree with you completely (my entry was horrid!!!) but I think you absolutely nailed it with this entry. I knew from the thumbs that this was likely your shot - the excellent lighting, the fantastic control of color, the wonderful and simple composition. Great stuff and congrats on another well deserved ribbon.

I love the intense colours, the smooth, bulging surface held together by surface tension, the lovely liquid-saturated sugar cube with such fine detail of the crystals and that little drop below turned into molten gold by the light falling through it. Great composition, great sharpness, lovely contrast. All good.

i want to say irene like setup ... but the rift on upper right is a little un-characteristic. And i would have liked the whole sugar cube in focus.
