 I actually thought about thsi challenge when I was out shooting wild flowers. The idea is to make one flower stand out, while showing the rest as below it and blurred into the background. I'll probably get slammed for "shoestringing" into a challenge, but in reality it is a perfectly fine submission.

Technical stuff:
Cloudy skies -- perfect for flowers!
70-200mm lens @ F4 for shallow DOF
Increase saturation and contrast, and a bit of cropping, and taht's it.

BTW guys, thanks for your kind comments... this is one of my fav photos so far this year because i was able to "see" the results before i take the photograph in my mind, so i thoroughly enjoyed shooting this image (and other similar images).

That's what i thought John, but i guess people just dont' agree with flower strength :) I guess they have never seen dying flowers.

I think it meets the challenge quite well... I gave it a 10... the impression that this leaves on me is that this single flower is 'rising above the rest'.

A beautiful image - I love the vivid colours and the effect of the low DOF on the background. I am not sure how strongly this meets the challenge but it's certainly a striking image.

Excellent DOF. A tighter top or bottom crop to get the flower out of the vertical center may have helped.

This has got to be my favourite shot from this challenge. The colours and crispness of the shot are just perfect. If i could score higher than 10 i would do so.

Wonderful play of colors. Exposure on the main subject appears a bit hot. Ithink it composition is good but would have been even better if the camera were moved up a bit so that the main suject had the green and blue directly behind it, instead of the similar colors. (8)

I love the dof here --
To me this forces the viewer to focus on the subject. In this shot the colors in the background are very appealing. That isn't always the case and can often cause them to look muddy. Great shooting. Love this affect, and the light is wonderfully controlled. Good luck in the challenge. 7 from me.

stands out well, with a great colour palette for the background - good work - perhaps a touch overstaturated but it is difficult keeping those yellows under control!
