Think of it this way: you generated controversy and made people think about and react to your work that they actually made an effort to comment. That in itself is a huge accomplishment. Congratulations.

I didn't get the chance to vote on this challenge, and wish I'd seen this. I've tried this exact same picture many times and it's very hard to get right. Unfortunately, you were hit by the DPC curse. Great job, anyway, and way to go in the Silhouettes challenge with your ribbon - you showed them! :)

I scored this photo high - it is a very good photo and a very good theme. This group is extremely liberal (but the do take nice photos!).
Welcome to DPC and keep entering!

A very apt title. There are no "values" represented in this picture at all. Just the worship of a piece of cloth.

Truly a diversion from the pursuit of real peace & justice.

All: There is a story that a respected Jananese business man said "A complaint is like a gift from the Gods." Well - for this image the Gods were generous indeed. I truly apprecate all the comments.

I was very surprised to see the distribution of scores - getting each and every score from 1 to 10!

For those who thought it was a copy - I must tell you that it was my very first challenge entry as I had just discovered the site. So, it was not a copy, but an unfortunate retread of an overused theme. In retrospect, I should have looked around the site a lot more before I entered a challenge. (It would be a good idea to tell "newbies" this perhaps.)

I have sent Mr. Setzler a private message apologizing for not having the forsight to look around past challenges, favorites, etc.

Finally, for the many many non-American DPCers, I would like to say that I was not trying to be an "ugly American" by suggesting the American flag was a symbol of strength. Once again, shame on me for not being aware this is a truly international group.

Once again, THANK YOU ALL for the gifts!

You get a 10 on GP. Good idea. I like this use of the flag the best!

Hasn't this been done already,,,to death?

Have to confess I don't understand how bubbles of the US flag shows its values, but maybe I am naive. I would also think this is Photoshopped but I may be mistaken.

well executed, but I'm not sure I get the same message as the artist intended. I get the message that America is dilluted and viewed through prisms that distort it. Though that is an interesting thesis, it does not seem to demonstrate "strength", I've also seen this concept executed before.

I hate to say it, but I think mostly everyone will agree this has got to be the most overused technique here on DPC. I give this a 1 for creativity. On top of that, the image overall lacks sharpness and the entire photo seems out of focus. I would've admired brighter highlights for this as well, 3 for technicality.

This looks very similar to a clever use of water droplets to reflect an object (I think it was also a flag) in an earlier challenge. Since then, I have seen a number of variations on the theme, and it has evolved into a cliche IMHO.

Great to see this effect making a comeback! It's been months since it's appeared on this site!

Nicely done. One of my favorites for the challenge.

Use rainX next time to treat the glass, the drops are too running and the edges no smooth...the rainX prevents this as well as giving a better, higher, smoother drop....Perhaps a review of Setzler's drop shot image may help as well.

This is a good attempt at trying to get reflections in whater droplets. Better focus would probably give the image more impact.

oh, this appears to be a tribute to mr seltzer here... pretty reasonable effort, i must say... I wonder what comment he'll leave... It's a pity the edges of the drops are so jaggedy - kind of detracts the overall effect. fine effort though.

just another one of so many gimmicky flag shots...your take is better than most.

Needs a bit more variation in the water drop size to match the original ;) Otherwise, not a bad copy.

Ok this technic has been tried on this site a few times, but its fun for people to try it out, But I think this shot lacks originality If you were trying out for jmsetzlers photo, than you didnt do a good job copying that one, This picture seems to lack focus and the drops seems to be lined up in not a very photographicly good order, anyway good luck in future challenges and remember to use your imagination! :)

The irregular edges on the drops and the right side of the photo (empty space without drops) hurts the photo.

How many times have I seen almost this exact photo in challenges in the past? I think it did pretty well the first couple dozen times, but it's wearing thin in reuse.

Youn will get criticized for copying the famous "Liberty and Justice" image but this is a good technique to practice. The main thing to do next time is to treat the glass (RainX works really well) and your water drops will look a lot better.

Good idea, I love the use of water drops to focus an otherwise unfocused element. After this competition I have no doubts what americans think of their country :)

There are American flags for every challenge.
This is by far the best that i have ever seen.
Well done. A fanastic photograph.

There seems to be a lot of Americana in this challenge. I guess people from other countries could say their country symbols are strong as well. This concept is a good idea for a photo, but it's been done quite a bit in other challenges (the eye drops). My only suggestion would be that the drops in this particular image have very jagged edges. I'm not sure how you'd rectify that. It's a good idea, but just not very original to me. - 5

Not original at all, think the exact same idea has been done by jmsetzler (might even be a tutorial of it)

04/14/2004 08:02:02 AM
needs a more original technique and subject matter. The droplets should have been of different, and more random sizes and spacing.

04/14/2004 07:47:03 AM
It's out of focus, it has been seen so many times, droplets are too big, color is poor....i'm sorry but I can only give it a bad vote...

A very nice attempt at recreating a classic!
Unfortunately, the drops are deforming...
