Hey, finally a shot of a flower I can identify! :>P Yep, yet another handheld macro from my hike at Robert Sibley -- sorry to keep posting from the weekend, but this week has been a bear at work and I got several that I really liked from Sunday, including this one. I am, however, reviewing and editing the shots on a daily basis, so that at least is keeping my head in the game.
If it was later in the month I might have saved this one for the free study, but still early and lots more, hopefully better, photos to come.
I was trying to frame this against the hill to make it seem larger than it was, and I think it worked the way I intended. More of a close up than a macro, I guess.
Not much processing on this one, just a little shadow/hilite adjustment and a pretty mild USM, but I did fiddle around a bit with the RAW conversion and that might have contributed to the processed feel noted below. It may also just be the subject, and a disconnect between the up close flower and the distant hills...

I like the focus on the flower and the limited DOF. The colors are incredible. I also really like the background showing but not in focus, it looks like the flower was inside and this was shot through a dusty window. I also like the tip of the flower aligned with the top of the hill. |

Am agreeing with PP commentary, but trying to figure out what is causing it. Looks like there was somehow some movement in the tip of the flower that the rest of the stabilized stalk did not readily exhibit. At 1/180, I cannot image not freezing this subject unless the wind was whipping at a 100mph. Perhaps it is a haloing effect between the fore and backgrounds. Rather than USM, try a duplicate layer Highpass with a very low px width and soft light or overlay to complete the sharpen. That may eliminate the halo.
Love the subject and composition. |

Not bad - looks a little oversharpened/over-PP'd though? |
