This was shot through a fence and a screen. To do that you need a wide aperture and to be at just the right angle with the bird in a certain spot. Sun has to be at a minimum too.
Maybe if people knew it was not just some bird easily sitting in front of me they would have appreciated it more.
Oh well. |

I agree, Renee, I thought this was a great shot also. Look at the 12 people who gave it a 1!! I'd like to hear why they think it deserves a 1. Extreme voting I guess. :) |

The people who can't see animals as having portraits are boneheads. I'm sorry. This is a fabulous shot. There are many other ones which are higher rated which DO NOT deserve the score if you ask me personally. |

Nicely exececuted but I don't believe that an animal shot really fits my defiintion of portraiture for the challenge. |

Awesome portrait. My number one pick for this challenge. Nice color, contrast, and DOF. |

Personally, I love the nature shots so I'm glad you included one. I love this bird. It has beautiful colouring. Also, I like your composition. I just moved to BC and I'm getting familiar with the birds of prey in my neighborhood. I'll be interested to find out the species of hawk or eagle this is once the challenge is over. |

Great shot. Love the DOF and the catchlights in the eyes. Heck, most of the time I can't get this clear a shot of a human model. Congrats on this capture. If I was going to touch this up at all it'd be the eye. I think a selective edit by using either the Oval selection tool or the Polygon selection and then adding a Curves Adjustment Layer or Levels Adjustment Layer to just the eye selection might bring out the golden-brown to highlight the personality even more. I like it as it is but I think that edit might be worth the time just to see if you can pull that out without popping a red cast on the eye. One thing I especially like are the little feathers poking out on the wings; we have a couple of cockatiels and its fun to see some of the more characteristic little idiosyncracies that birds exhibit sometimes.
One of the better examples in this challenge. |

How mighty and proud he is. Power! Good color. |

Splendid picture, maybe a better cropping coul improve it, the gap at the side is distracting. |

Nice image. IMO the dept of field is a little too fuzzy and the contrast needs to be sharper and more pronounced. |

There's a worrying red tinge on this wonderful shot. |

the framing feels left-heavy to me, and a bit tight on the top |
