Found this location while cruising other photography sites and saw it was only 45 minutes away. After work I drove like a madman to catch the last 20 minutes of sunlight. This is a restored grist mill in Woodland, Washington. The original was built in 1876 which qualifies as "really old" for the West Coast.

The processing is pretty heavy for basic. Converted from RAW with an extra warm tone (like 8000/22). Then did a Shadows/Highlights (until they declare it illegal), and went at it with the basic adjustment layers. The biggest change was a fairly strong shift of yellows to the red side (versus my normal green shift which did not look good in this shot). I think it gives the picture a timeless rustic feel without going all the way sepia. Then some sharpening and resize and a NI run after resize. Some further wide radius USM and a bit more gaussian (faded). Bam.

Hope it does well. I shot it less than four hours before the challenge was over. I wish I could use advanced editing on this one for some selective sharpening of the building and some judicious dodge and burn.

Jason,

You are one of the few photographers who has the courage to create beautiful digital paintings from your images. I would love to see more of these digital works of art in DPC. As a graphic illustrator/fine artist, I truly appreciate these kinds of creative interpretations. Beauty is in definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Keep up the good work!

Funny thing is I was going to go there, too, for this challenge (After researching the area). I, however, never made it. Terrific image and I really like the reds.

WOW! The colors here are spectacular! Great job racing the light for the shot! I was doing that the other day to catch the late day light on the leaves near my house.

hmmmm, maybe he'd like to trade places with me? Just kidding, this is a great image, Doc....I felt sure it was a ribbon entry, and I was right. Congratulations.

It would be weird if you would win a blue or yellow ribbon with such a “reddish” photo ;)

Congratulations!

VERY PRETTY BUT I THINK I WOULD LIKE IT BETTER WITH A LITTLE LESS SATURATION...A BIT MORE OF A NATURAL LOOK.

A nice shot of the mill, but the color saturation is over the top, and takes away from the "old" feel.
