Challenge: Negative Space (Classic Editing)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 4500
Location: A Boise, Idaho park
Date: Sep 14, 2002
Aperture: 10.3
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/235
Date Uploaded: Sep 15, 2002

Chance encounter with this cyclist at Camel's back park in Boise. He's riding across the face of a hill at about 6:45 pm. The dry grass makes the degative space. I changed the contrast and did an unsharp mask at 1 pixel and 40%

Congrats on 10th!!!
Apologies for not finishing my comments...As I read a few of the other comments, I too wondered what it looked like horizontal - just curious. As it is, I definately think that the neg space really brings out the subject - makes a statement. I love the angle, makes it seem as if there is no trail. I like the colors as well. Great job!

I know you probably couldn't controll it but I think a complimentary color, like purple, blue or green on the bike and rider would have made this a 10 for me. As it is you only get a 9. : )

Very wonderful shot. This would have been a 10 from me but I felt like the rider just was a bit overpowered by the space....still...very nice..9 hokie

Great shot. I don't know how your surroundings where, but I would have liked it cropped the other way to give him more things in front of him to make it look like he had a long way to go. 7

YES! Excellent negative space!, and good contrast with the subject. -10

The inclusion of the grassy land above and below and infront really make this shot by placing the biker so effectively in the environment. The grass works both as an abstract background and as a specific location. The colours and light are good.
Great shot!

I simply love this. I wish I had more to say, but you've done a great job.

Beautiful use of negative space. Only detractor is the soft focus on the bike, but that could be the resampling step.... 9

the grass has incredible texture, quite the opposite of neg space

looks like a magazine ad shot! very good! 9

One of my favorites this week - excellent use of negative space to add Wow to the main image. Wonderful texture and tone in the neg space, interesting colors in the positive - orange, brown, black, green, white, red. Great job!

Cool shot.

Just what ever you do, don't light a match........my only pointer: the biker could have been a brighter color. The red blends too well into the background.

I love it.

technically excellent

Very nice colors, and I think I can see why you had a vertical framing here, but what did it do with a horizontal one? karmat

Great action shot using negative space!

I like the feel of this photo. It gives me a feeling that this cyclist is really all alone out there. It may be just my imagination but the front tire seems to be plowing down the tall grass in front of it as it speeds along.

One of the best examples of negative space I have seen. I love the way the colors of the bicyclist stand out against the brown grasses. I can feel the struggle of his/her journey. Excellent picture. A 10 from me.

Very good composition. I like bikes so this one really caught my attention. Very interesting terrain to be riding.
09/16/2002 04:13:00 PM
nice shot.

Excellent. Shows what the cyclist must face... and gives an air that he/she is alone in this personal challenge.

very cool use of - space :)
09/16/2002 03:21:00 PM
excellent composition and negative space.
09/16/2002 01:27:00 PM
could this have been cropped lengthwise instead up vertcaly? if there are no obstacles I would prefer the horizontal crop on this.

Excellent shot, well-balanced spaces. 9 Jak

This is an excellent photo... I don't know if it would have been possible or not, but I would love to have seen this one horizontal to provide the rider much more room to move.. good work = 8 - jmsetzler
