Challenge: December Free Study (Advanced Editing I*)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Winston-Salem, NC
Date: Dec 30, 2003
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/3 sec
Galleries: Portraiture, Studio
Date Uploaded: Dec 31, 2003

I was going for the old fashion painted photo look with this picture. I didn't think it would do as well as it did considering the anti-editing crowd here.

It was not done using Neat Image as everyone thought, but freehand in PS.

This shot is wonderful but her face looks somehow artificial. I think something you did in post-processing is a bit overdone for my tastes.

While you have obviously put your best effort into this picture I think there is room for improvement. But first the good things :). Your (attractive) model has a great expression and the way her skin looks is pretty glamorous. I also love her casual hairstyle.

Now the bad things: the background is too light for my taste; it distracts my attention from the model. It also makes the face looks too dark. Besides this you should have used a tighter crop; there is too much space between the head and the top of the photo. Overall an average photo (5).

Beautiful portrait. Professional studio looking. The woman's face, though, appears too plastic and not natural. I'm wondering if you used a noise reducing filter to get these results. This has that "retouched" look which may, or may not, be desireable.

Nice shot. While I like neatimage's effects on skin, this comes across as perhaps too much. Also, I think this might have been better if cropped closer at the top.

How did you get the skin tones so smooth? Almost looks photoshoped

Woa.... this has neat image written all over it. If you didn\'t neat this until it crashed your PC, I wanna know how you did this? Seriously! Shoot me a note.

Awesome potrait. Great subject. I really like the hair halfway over the right eye. She almost looks a little dirty, but she really isn't?????

I wanna see this shot with a different background, but with the white, it still marks really high. I think a diff background color other then that shirt color would work better.

Not to keen on the plastic face look. Neatimage?

Here face is too perfectly smooth, not real natural looking to me. Kind of cake make-up look. Everything else is nice.

Pretty. The face/skintones look overly re-touched. My imagination?

Of it's type this is well done - but you've taken the skin smoothing trick so far it's reminiscent of the worst kind of over-processed glamour photography, and effectively taken all the humanity out of your subject. It's also left a peculiar shading around the inside of the left eye. Just too much of the selective blurring, really. Lighting is good, catch-light in the eyes is good, naturalness of the model is good.

I'm guessing you ran this through Neat Image or something. The face looks just a bit too unnatural. Other than that, this would be a great photo.

While I do like the pose, the color and sharpness, I do have problems with the too soft skin: looks a little unnatural to me.
Otherwise a great portrait.

way too much skin softening here, done well but if used 2nd layer I would put at 30-40% opacity. Also more care on the hair when deleting softening look.

Whoa! Way too much post processing. Kinda over did the neat image. So much so that it does not even look real. I think it spoiled an otherwise good picture. I like the look on the face with the slight Mona Lisa grin. 6

The pose and lighting are very nice and first impressions are very good. However, looking a bit longer, it looks like the skin has been touched up so much it looks like wax. There is absolutely no texture to the skin.

A very nice portrait, but I think you ran it through NEatIMage. I find the softening of the skin has been overdone. Her skin does not look real anymore. Also the crop could be a little tighter at the top. Too much empty space, and for no real reason.

Might have cropped a little more of the top, but very smooth and shot though.

The softnes of the skin gives a retro look to the picture. very well done. Maybe a bit too much centered.

A bit unnaturally smooth skintone gradations, too plasticky/painted. I'd work on that. The technique I know is a bit too much to explain. :(
Pose and lighting are good, you could dodge the eyes a bit.

Nice lighting for the shot. The skin looks a bit unnatural to me as though there was some retouching done. The extra space at the top doesn't add to the photo - you may want to try a tighter crop. overall a good shot - it makes me want to know more about the person in it which is what a good portrait should do. = 7

Much to heavy on the neat image here, and if that was intentional I don't understand the statement. A nice potrait otherwise, well lit, a nice subject, well positioned everything. You have a definite talent as a potrait photographer, just tone down the neat image. WAY down.

Very, very pretty. The complextion is almost too good to be true. The "Breck girl" gets a high rating from me.

The only thing that bugs me is the nose. Maybe smooth out the line that is running down it. She is very pretty and the lighting and expression is great.

May have been perfect if you had removed the strands of hair across your subject's face. I suspect you worked hard to include those. :)

Nice job!

Maybe NeatImage a tad overdone but it produces a very effective portrait - would that skin really looked like that! I like it!!!

A little too much bluring.

There is much detail here, focus (note left eye), makeup and lighting (note shadow under nose and fill on left). The loose hair detracts from this otherwise technically good photograph

The skin is so smooth it almost doesn't look natural around her nose on the left side, otherwise a very nice shot. 7
