Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED
Location: My backyard in Suffern, NY
Date: Dec 16, 2003
Aperture: f/16
ISO: 500
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Dec 29, 2003

First attempt at using a "flash extender" - a "Better Beamer" - with my flash. This was a handheld shot using a 400mm lens and a 1.4x lens extender. I shot this at ASA 500 at 1/160th at f/16 with the flash set at -1 compensation. Post editing was cropping, Nik Define filter, Nik Sharpening and fixed a few dust spots.

Beautiful lighting and colors. Great detail in the bird and good DOF. Something looks unusual about the bird's beak. Is that bird seed in it's mouth or glare??? In any case, I do find that to be a distracting element in an otherwise absolutely gorgeous picture. Well done.

An excellent shot. If the point of view were a bit more to the right, the branch wouldn't cut the bird off so much.

Nice cardinal, it also shows the woodland habitat well.

The tonal balance is great an so is the color. It is just that the face is a bit soft (motion?) and the tail a bit oversharpened (diagonal jaggies).
The choice of a wide aperture helps to blur out the busy background and the exposure is just excellent. 8

Very tight shot. Congrats. I like the way you filled the frame with the bird. The branch adds a nice diagonal to the photo. Jacko. 10

Very awesome. I've shot enough birds to know what a great shot this is. The DOF is spot on for bringing all the attention to the subject.
