I had the idea of taking ink spinning in a vortex shape inside an aquarium. After spending a whole morning trying to get satisfactory results by taking a side on photo the results were really disappointing, until I looked from the top down and loved the swirl effect. So...

The set-up:

Camera over head looking down.
White foamcore on the table top.
A glass flower pot flipped upside down to let light get under.
On top of the flower pot a jar, juice jar with nice round edges.
On one side had a strobe (800w) with a big cup and Waxing paper in front (1/4 power).
On the other side a strobe (800w) with a softbox (1/1 power).

After that it's fairly simple. Put in red colorant in the water. When I had my desired red shade, I swirled up the water with a stick and added blue colorant.

I had to repeat this a number of times... but after a few hours I had the "perfect" swirl... or maybe I've just seen too many and got tired so I chose this one! who knows!?!

Post-production:

PhaseOne (RAW file): White balance, brightness, contrast, saturation convert to TIFF.

PhotoShop: Saturation. Contrast. Clean-up lens dust. Unsharp-mark. Resize. Save as jpeg.

As you can now read, it's ink in water so not smoke or paint!

Oh well, I really thought it would do better than that... maybe abstract doesn't fly here.
