Unlike cemetaries of other religions, Jewish cemetaries are very closely monitored and treated as private property, no strangers allowed - as I discovered I was chased out. The caretaker, while stern with me, did understand that I wasn't trying to cause trouble and that I simply didn't know, and pointed out that the one "up the hill" was fair game as a historic landmark.
The historic cemetary is where I took this photo. I was drawn to the haphazard placement of the plots - there are no orderly rows here at all - but I was particularly struck by how many people buried here had died quite young. Nina, in the foreground, was 19. Behind her, Robert was 24. A.Z., to Robert's right, was 25. A little bit of research revealed that these were mostly factory workers from the east coast who developed tuberculosis and came to Denver for the benefit of an arid climate, but even just eighty years ago life in Colorado was still pretty rough.
For this shot, I wish I had a better camera, one that has aperature options above 7.9... the city begs to be clear but can't be due to the limitations of my equipment. So I opted to make the soft focus intentional and applied sharpening only to the headstones. I was backed up as far as I could go against the boundary fence with my telephoto lens to get as many headstones in the photo as possible. |

Also would have been a good entry in the Grain contest. I don't like the hazy city in the background -- distracting. |

I don't think the soft focus really works here. I really like the composition and contrast in this picture and would love to see it all in focus. |
