I have been racking my brain trying to come up with something everyone else will not think of. I am hoping that this is unique enough to get me in the top 10.

Good job. Glad you made it into the top 10. One of my favorites for the week.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I am so pumped to barely make it into the Top 10. This is only the 2nd time I have submitted anything!! After not submitting anything for the New Challenge I knew that I had to come up with something for this Pencil Challenge. It couldn't be easier all we had to do was get a shot with a pencil in it. I came up with this idea one day while trying to think completly outside of the box. We have a pretty extensive garden and an over abundance of ripe tomatos. I tried sever differant angles, but found this one worked the best. I would push the pencil in and out of the tomato. With that kind of action the tomatoe finally started to ooze our some juices. This is exactly what I was looking for!. I finally had to resort to squeezing the thing to get the shot that I wanted. Thank you all for the votes and the great comments. I am still learning and hope to make the Top 10 again someday. NormW

A super macro... It seems like I could reach right into my screen and touch it!

Ouch.

Seems this photo could almost be called "Birth" or "Vicious Intruder." I personally prefer something without the challenge topic in the title. This is a very colorful photo. How you came up with this idea just stumps me totally. (Not that I think it's a bad idea, just the opposite.) The two things that are distracting me are - The softened edges of the red tomato and the blown highlight on the tomato . To me, soft edge needs to be crisp and sharp and softening the lighting glare on the tomato would make it lok rounder and fuller and more luscious.

I think this is a very striking picture. I love the colors. I think this is a great photo.

Great composure and idea. My guess is that it's a tomato.

Very nice. It reminds me of Harold Edgerton's stop-motion pics.

Really cool - sooo different and interesting (Running out of steam for commenting - so being brief) Composition, subject, lighting, idea, color, background - all great for this image - I see a lot of thought, time, effort and skill went into this image Awesome 9

This makes me laugh as I was thinking about doing something like this but couldn`t figure how to slam a pencil into a wood plank at 90 miles per hour like the old `Bic` commercials. (If your not 40 years old or so, never mind...)
I like this! Is that a tomato?

Wonderful--a great surprise--vivid colours--good focus--andrewm

I feel it's pain (the tomatoe's)! Great composition and love the dribbles of juice and the stains and grains of tomato on the pencil tip. The background is appearing stripey to me?

Nice simple shot. I had a similar idea, but with the pencil looking like it's coming out of my arm instead. Never tried it though.

I don't want to like this shot, but I can't help it, it is quite striking. Very nicely composed.

i love shot. very creative.

I love the various textures, from wet to dry, smooth to mottled, black to colorful. Very nice framing, too. Only thing I'd suggest (and it's not allowed for the contest) is to adjust the background so that it is almost pure white).

This photo looks extremely professional! Also a very original idea!

great composition and to the point(no pun intended)..I especially like the drop and rivelit running down the front.
08/21/2002 12:55:00 PM
Nice macro. A little disturbing but technically well done.

Weird, that is for certain.

This is just a little soft of focus on the right side of the tomato but I like it that way. Don't know of anything that I would really try and change, really good shot. 9

Great angle. At first, I thought the pencil was a bit dark, but then I was thinking. It just got jabbed through a tomoto. Why would it be all bright and shiny. Placement is very visually powerful. A little puzzled by the horizontal flow of juice. The background fits this very nicely. I think the light glare adds to the photo in this case. Very powerful shot. Good luck in the challenge.

Wow! This is wonderful.

Very nice composition and the tomato looks great against the white background.

Wonderful composition and use of color. Background is very effective and works well to place emphasis on the point of the pencil. (I think you're right, great minds do think alike! ;-) LanSnake

Simply awesome! Great color and depth.
08/19/2002 06:13:00 PM
poor tomato! Could have been a great shot, but the light needs to be better on the pencil tip I think. The tomato/ red is wonderful but the yellow doesn't really pop/ seem clean enough.
08/19/2002 04:02:00 PM
Wonder picture - weirdly makes me hungry. I will be interested to read how you did this one (while piercing, after piercing?)
08/19/2002 02:36:00 PM
I really like this one. Really catches my eye. 9.

This is the most unusual pencil case I've ever seen. The shot itself is superb and it really works well. It's inventive and it's colourful. Good luckâ€Â¦ (10)
