The Iwo Jima Memorial honors fallen US Marines. It has a commanding view across the Potomac River to Washington, DC.

The clouds tonight had a very brown color to them. It started raining about 30 minutes after I took this.

I used a layer with the blending mode set to "soft light" to rescue detail in the hard shadows (to lighten, painted white) and darken some of the bright spots (painted those areas black). Here it is without that layer:

Tonight was fun because I got to meet JerseyGenie who was in town, and JimyThing joined us as well. The Iwo Jima was our first stop. Unfortunately, Jeanne fell on wet pavement and broke her leg! I went with her to the hospital until her son could get there (he lives in DC).

So here's my memento for Jeanne of her trip to DC - she's in the ambulance whose lights are just visible to the right of the statue:

Get well quickly, Jeanne!

I am always moved by this memorial and your portrayal of it here is nothing but fantastic. I have never seen anyone take a creative approach like yours to photograph the memorial and it works so wonderfully. Beautiful, beautiful picture.

I really regret not seeing that memorial when I was in DC....we didn't get over to Arlington at all, very disappointing. Lovely photo.

Nice angle and light for this shot, and the flag in motion is perfect.

Oh you LUCKY!!! I'm so jealous that you and Jeanne and Jimmy got to get together.

But the I read about her breaking her leg. I can't believe that happened! I'm so sorry !!

These are great pictures Jeff. They are very commanding like the statutes!

This is one of the most patriotic memorials to me. Good angle and lens choice for the image. There are some heroic, and sad stories associated with the guys who were actually involved when the famous photo was made.
