I donated whole blood for several years before discovering platelet donation. Platelets are the cells that make clots, stopping you from bleeding from minor cuts. Most patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment or organ transplant need platelets in order to survive.
Each donation provides as many platelets as 6 whole blood donations. And thanks to my genes, I can give a double donation, or the equivalent of 12 whole blood donations.
In the US, call 800-272-2123 to donate platelets or visit the American Red Cross Web site to find out how to donate platelets or blood.
As for the shot, I'm pretty amazed it's so clear, since it was handheld. Editing was just a little saturation bump, color correction, brightening, and sharpening. I wish it were advanced so I could clone out the reflections and the lamp, but I like the shot and I want to promote donating platelets and blood. Hopefully it'll stay above 5.0. |

Congratulations on scoring above a 5.0 as you had hoped.
I agree with you that the reflections on the cross and the light in the background are both distracting. Perhaps you should have stepped a little further back and to the right and pointed the camera a little more to the left. This would have allowed all of the words on the gray stone to be visible and may have placed the red cross in front of the beinlight in the background. Without being there I really can't tell if that would've presented more problems or not. It may have made the reflections better but it may have made them worse. After looking a bit more I realize that if you move too far to the right you will block part of the title "To Those We Serve". The entire composition may need to be rethought.
While I am sure this is due to the material used in the cross (I assume it is marble) it does resemble noise that is often produced at higher ISO levels. I am sure this isn't the case because the rest of the image seems to have none but it is rather distracting.
Where are you trying to focus the viewers attention? The cross is too dark so my eyes naturally look towards the distracting background found between the red cross and gray wall.
In closing, I do feel that you met the challenge as your image does portray something good. Nice work. |

I think you chose a great subject for this photo. I also like that you posted the info on the Red Cross, as everyone should be aware and donate! Good for you.
Technically, maybe not your strongest shot. The composition is fine but doesn't jump out at me the way some of your other night photos do. I'm also not wild about the lighting, but I don't think you could have done much with it - I suspect you would have to take a lot of specialized equipment with you to fix the inerent problems due to choppy lighting design. Obviously in advanced editing you could have fixed a lot of that PP, but alas, it was basic :-) As Bob mentioned, I'd be interested to see this from a couple different angles.
BTW - pretty sharp for handheld at 1/5. You must have nerves of steel, my friend.

Good job and the score is pretty good too. At least for me that's a good score. I think it's a nice shot but something about the angle seems off a little. Maybe it's just me but I wonder what it would have looked like from the other side. |

Good idea and message. I wonder what this white spots are on a red cross. The composition is very good. |

The words that are cut off on the left are a little distracting. Either cropping them out, or including the full statements would be nice. This is a great "good" idea though. |
