Photographer’s Notes
Near my apartment, there is a market. The quality and price of the fruits and vegetables there is good and it attracts a lot of customers. There’s always something new and interesting to see or buy. I have seen these hybrid vegetables, a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, and wanted to photograph one for some time. Here’s my shot.
Conditions weren’t great. It was pretty dim inside the market. An awful lot of folks pushing and shoving to get what they want. Together it made it difficult to get a clearly focused low light shot … but I succeeded.
I had fun with this. Hope you enjoy it.

CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE

Compositionally, this is a very strong image. The subject is in the right third which gives a sense of stability and balance to the shot. It is framed by the two leafy parts, which gives it "boundaries" that differentiate the veggie from the rest of the shot as well. this helps to break up the shot into different parts and add interest.

Technically, the lighting is good, the exposure is good, and the focus is good. The shallow dof helps to emphasize the subject, and you have good detail which has not been lost in shadows or highlights. The viewer can almost "feel" the vegetable, just by looking at it.

While it is a technically well done photograph, it is not one that "moves" the voter or makes them linger for a bit longer. In looking at your bar graph, there were significantly more 5s than anything, and this tells me that most viewers looked at it like I would have -- a technically good shot that has little or no emotional appeal that the viewer can identify with.

Best to you in future challenges, and if I need to further explain or clarify anything, please feel free to contact me.

Mathematician or Computer Scientist? :D Certainly an interesting vegetable shot. I like how you held back and didn't try to fill the frame with this as the surrounding environment adds context to the photo. Good luck in the challenge.
