OK now this one made me go "Awwwwwww". How very sweet or should I say bittersweet? Love the Star Wars bag. Even if he is just "pretending" this still kind of chokes me up! That'll my little one all too soon.

TERRIFIC PHOTO. It almost looks like one of those hand-painted cards that bring back nostalgic feelings about our youth. Job well done.

Thanks for all of the awesome comments. I am pleased with my "Top 10" finish. To address a couple of comments, it was a touch dark, but lightening in postprocessing made teh colors do funky things. I left the column on teh right to make the little boy look smaller, and i didn't include the school name for a couple of reasons. Primarily because it is Canton MIDDLE School, and this kid is obviously not in 6th grade. None of the elementary schools around had teh right look that i wanted. Again thanks!

My niece just started kindergarten as well. This was my idea, but I never got around to taking it. You did an excelellent job. Congrats.

A new day in school :) I love how the (looking at it again, it was off on my monitor...) SCHOOL hints at what this is...and the little kid looks afraid to go in...Wonderful

excellent. great composition, subject, focus. my only nitpicks: maybe a stop or two too dark, and you might want to try cropping off some of the right hand side. otherwise, everything is really great. good work.

A shot full of feelings of apprehension - good composition, great choice of lighting (the gloomy doorway is perfect), and a cunning title ;o) Gotta give it a 10...

Nice. Maybe the whole name should be visible above the entrance.

The blue lunch bag made this photo for me. I can really feel his tension.

This is the third time I have looked at this image, the thumbnail gets my attention with the blue bag. Then I see thge full size image I get lost in all the details, maybe a tighter crop and a slightly different angle to just focus on the child and the word 'SCHOOL' and a bit of the front door handle. Still one of my top ten picks this week.

Nice concept that meets the challenge well. Too dark though. Composition is good.

It looks like he's doubting if he shoud go or not. You should have given him a laser-swords too :)
Seriously, I like the strong composition of this photo and the way the blue colored bag stands out is superb. Besides that I like the way you showed the first schoolday a lot! The angle of the wall on the right is distrubing though. Maybe you should have framed/cropped the photo in such way that it would not be visable at all. That's the only reason I give it a 9 instead of a 10.

I like the emotional hesitation this shot portrays. The clarity is very nice, but some parts seem dark to me, like the boy's arm and the entryway. I like the entryway being dark, implies a foreboding, but not the arm. 7 Swash

This photo hits hard with me cause I have a little boy too who will be going to pre school in the near future. This could have been entered into the fear challenge too! I love how you captured the word school in the photo like that. Wouldn't make as much sense if you had left that out. Really nice photo. I only slightly understood the title the first time I glanced through and voted now I see the little lunch bag. That's too cute. Great job and good luck in the challenge.

This is my favorite photo this week :) The bright blue bag against the flat background is excellent... I love the sense of 'new' and the sense of 'fear' in this photo... great work :) = 10 - jmsetzler

This is a great image. It conveys so much – my interpretation is first day at (a new) school. The child in the picture has been – by accident or by design – posed to perfection. A great title would have been 'I need a hug'. The loneliness conveyed makes you want to reach out and reassure the little chap that everything's going to be all right. The angle produces a superb sense of scale and creates a feeling of trepidation for both the child and the onlooker. This is a really professionally executed shot and deserves 10 easily. Great shot all round, good luckâ€Â¦

This is definitely a fitting subject. I can almost feel the aprehension myself. The large open archway looks inviting but the shadow and darkness of the archway still make it look scary (in the mind of a 6 year old, that is).

Find this a powerful and compelling image. It conveys strongly the feelings of awe and being overwhelmed this child must feel when entering school for the first day. I bet you will get some comments on why you did not crop out the right wall but I think it adds dimension to the overwhelming environment the child finds it in. You may also get comments on the doors being too dark and not having enough detail. Again, I suppose you did so deliberately to add to the child's feelings of darkness and awe. Well done. -9 Journey

A rather poignant shot. I can feel his pain! I really like this shot, and at first thought that I would rather see his face, but after coming back to it, I think that his position and posture say it all. lhall

I feel a desperate need to crop and rotate this... I even saved as just to satisfy the urge in photoshop, but mindful of copyright and invasion of privacy I have now deleted it completely from my PC. Lovely subject matter and I love that you have him facing the school rather than you. I find the image overall too dark.

very nice. love the composition. i really like the contrast of the blue bag compared to the more muted reds and greys of the school building. i also like the the little boy looking at the school instead of at the camera.

LOVE the concept - new school. Excellent thinking. Excellent framing too. Just lacking a little natural light to make it a perfect shot. Really love it, though.
