post challenge:
I did a research on studio lighting (softbox, fill flash) and I'm learning a lot. Thank you very much for your comments.
The chess pieces were custom made by my father. |

A bit more depth of field would be nice. Color seems off - the white isn't white, and overall contrast is a bit flat. |

Image has some hotspots that distract the eyes. Concept is good, but I think execution could be a bit better. Composition seems disjointed and lighting is spotty; maybe a different angle of the board might help, or use more available light or a diffused flash. Chess boards and pieces are difficult to shoot and make them look dynamic. I appreciate the effort. |

Nice composition, perhaps a bit too much light by the far angle of the board, very nice in generall though, you even constraucted a true check mate, I would rate this picture a 7 or 8, but I do not think of cess as a sport, tehrefore I do not think it meets the challenge. |

chess is my husbands passion, not for me but I admire those that play. This was a good idea you had. I think the composition is a little weak. Maybe if you/camera were lower or a lot higher to give more impact. It just seems a bit flat and static. |

That's a unique chessboard. I have never seen one with pieces like that before. Cool. I think you would have gotten better impact with the focal point being placed deeper into the board. As it is you're losing sharpness at the subject point (knocked over King). Window lighting is a bit harsh also. Obviously not a studio setup. Not sure what the best fix for the lighting is without some reflector - maybe fillflash set to low power (if camera supports it)? Anyway, best of luck to you in the challenge. |

needs a bit more DOF (the back pawns are not as sharp) and less harsh lighting. 5 |

Not a bad shot. I would have used a smaller aperture to increase depth of field but that does not mean it is the best way to shoot it. |

Lighting is a little harsh at the top of the photo, but I like it. Not your normal choice for a sporting event. |

Personally, I don't feel that the is a "sporting venue". Focus is kinda soft, lighting is overly harsh. |
