I actually don't mind this picture at all. I may have tried a few things, but I think that would have led to a different shot and maybe not what you were going for.
If cropping would allow, I may have tried to push the girl even further in the corner. My impression of zen is large areas of negative space. This would have been accentuated even more with the girl further from the center.
To go for the different look, I may have boosted the contrast to the point the boats are almost sillouettes and tried to add a tint to the picture with color balance. Maybe orange, maybe blue. It would be worth a try. |

I think this just suffered from looky too cloudy, like theres a haze over the entire scene. sometimes that works but not in this case. also if you could have brought out some color in the sky, not usre how possible that is though.
edit: sorry just read your comments. obviously you knew theres a haze or at least that it was a hazy day. i think if it were clearer that shot would have done a little better

There is some wonderful zen here. I really like how the boats are lined up, almost as if the two on the ends are paying homage to the center one and I like how the center one is lined up so its masts are making a lovely line in the center of the image. Normally things so centric wouldn't be nearly as interesting but I think it works here with the dynamic of the other two boats. I like the sort of hazy cloudy feel to this as well, gives it an almost dream-like quality. Unfortunately, and this has no bearing on your model specifically, I don't like the addition of the girl. I find it jars me away from the mood the rest of the seascape is presenting, both in its darkishness compared to the other tones and also in what seems to be a lot of sharpness around it (and slight turbulence in the water behind her). She just looks rather out of place in the image and that IMO detracts from the stillness and harmony the rest of the shot is instilling in me as the viewer. I do think its an excellent photo all the same, I gave a 6 |

This is very much what I imagine a zen photo should look like. Wonderful feel to this photo. I love the misty look to it. |

Great tonal qualities in this pretty photo. There is just a bit too much going on here for it to truly give me a sense of serenity. If only the boats weren't in the background, it would be about perfect. |

This would be better without the person in the water |
