 Taken on a hike earlier this week. My favorite part of this photo is the dramatic lighting on the path due to the evening light filtering through the trees.

I decided to tone the b/w image because I thought it gave the dirt a nice warmth to it.

Post Processing in GIMP included basic levels and sharpening and quite a bit of dodging and burning.

Composition, focus and PP are nicely done. The lighting is really tough and it would have been nearly impossible not to have areas of blown highlight outside the path.

I could quickly tell this would be at the top of my 4.5-5.5 scale. I think the biggest issue simple pertains to what enough people considered "desolate". Perhaps the "nice warmth" you added with the duotone worked against you in this regard. I don't think it was a biggie though, but I'm not looking for "nice" in desolate...

A beaten path might indicate too many people for real desolation ;) That aside, good composition and your leading lines work well.
