Amazing shot, Judy. Grossly underrated. |

A concept has often hidden cultural aspects by those who speak it as a naitive language. We, who have to rely on dictionaries to get a part the meaning, often experience that narrow approach to words Judy mentions in her post challenge clause.
By the way, the photo is absolutely stunning. Editing skills amazing. |

Judy, your photoshop skills are SO GOOD! The post-processing on this is spectacular. I remember seeing this guy when you took the picture, and tho I love that elephant. . .he didn't look THIS awesome!!! You're amazing! And I think this photo is underrated big time! |

I thought I recognized that elephant, or at least that wall behind the elephant. I really like the processing you used here. I happen to know that it's tough to get contrast on these gals in the setting they have them and you did a very nice job dealing with that situation! |

I actually already voted on this - one of my few. I stopped voting out of sheer aggrevation. My interpretation is different from everyone else's, almost. I really love the tone and texture of this image. Its almost alive and three dimensional. I like oyur title and the framing works for me. But, for me, this is more desolate than desolation. Is there a difference? Well, yes - one is a noun and one is a verb. With it being a verb, its a feeling that can change. With it being a noun, its a state of being. So I have a hard time with people and animals having the state of being of desolation. Does that make sense? It is my own bias - maybe there are animals, people that could be desolation but I haven't found one yet. Make sense? At any rate I gave you a 7 - 3 for technicals and 4 for emotive quality.
If you think your score is low, it could be due to close minded people just like me. :) Bump to 8 due to voting on all images. Added one for challenge topic. |

I like this image a lot...the way it is set up with the texture of wall and elephant skin against each other is very good...sepia is great idea. |

the strange crop disorients the viewer, and the elephant blends into the wall, creating a vertiginous sense of desolation, only compounded by the sepia. 9. |

The zoo is a desolate place for animals. this is a great example ... we know elephants are intelligent and can get depressed - great emotion and texture. A new fave of mine (9). |

Yes, I can see the desolation in this photograph. I can feel the desolation of the elephant, I can feel the desolation of mother earth... I can feel the unrelenting passage of time - it appears that the elephant is fossilizing into the rock. This is haunting. |

Excellent elephant image. I like the feel of it and the contrast...however the challenge of desolation is not readily conveyed. 7 |

OutSTANDING!!! The barrenness of the surroundings coupled with the obvious age of that elephant! It reaks desolation! Great work! |

He looks so sad and lonely. I love the foot stepping up onto the frame. The editing adds to the desolate mood of the piece. Nice work. |

A fine animal, noble in its domain, caught, caged, and forgotten. A sense of desolation is evoked. |

Great subject but I would had dodged the elephant a little more and burned the background. I really like your composition. |
