Very evocative, title seems just right. The curled fingertips make me feel as if a door is being pulled shut. |

---Greetings from the Critique Club!---
First impression - nice cold feel, desolation comes across well.
In general I think this is a strong image. It invokes emotions from sadness to helplessness. As I mentioned in comments during the voting, the hand looks a bit too disconnected. Perhaps just a bit more shadow detail around the hand would help, hard to tell without knowing what is or isn't there.
I think the negative space on the left works well. Good decision not to crop in tighter.
6+ is good for an image that takes some artistic risks. DPC voters are not always kind to avant-garde images.
I hope this was helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
David

I thought this shot was terrific, and the darkness added to the desolate feel. |

I like this but the hand looks disconnected due to the darkness around it. |

It's a really nice shot. However for me there is too much black space. 8 |

This is lovely...can something "desolate" be lovely? I find this image quite stunning and oozing with mood, atmosphere and simple raw emotion, not at all feeling "contrived"...excellent work. |

Wonderful photgraph, great use of light and negative spcace. The light, face and overal darkness create a perfect mood. Love this shot. 10 & fav. |

An image with strong impact because of the special lighting that allows the emergence of the subject from the sheer black. 8 |

I like the fact you went with dark, frame filling image. Good eye. |

Not in favour of the large left hand side blackness. The black does not contribute bleek - it's just black. Otherwise, it does depict a desolate sort of feeling. |

Good lighting in this, good expression on the person's face, he (she?) looks forlorn and desolate. |

Good use of B/W. I like how the model blends in to the background. |

The hand seems a bit distracting. Because of the way it is lit, it is difficult to perceive how the whole arm is posed - fingers seem to be floating in space. Otherwise, great idea for the them, and nice contrast. |

Love this. Great use of negative space and the contrast is great. I like that I can't see the eyes. That slight bit of movement with the hand is excellent. |
