 The title is a bit of a pun. Most obviously complementary colours - The violet of the iris appears more blueish when backlit, and more purplish when front lit... blue and yellow are complementary colours, as are green and purple. Also the flower and the stalk complement each other, as in coming together to complete whole... and when you give someone flowers, it's a compliment ;)

Used a 25mm extension tube on the 100-400 to be able to focus close enough.

Not much editing (well, it's basic after all):
Slight crop to get rid of excess black
Threshold of 2 or so to get rid of the low-level background noise
Resize
Tiny amount of sharpening (never had to sharpen something so little in my life!)

THis is an excellent shot. The lighting is great, but that 's exaclty what it seems to be. It doesn't seem to me that you are "painiting with light". great shot though.
