Felix Beato was born in Corfu, Greece. He was one of the first foreign photographers in Japan, living there from 1863 to 1884. As well as portraits, he took photos of Japanese places (he also made an extensive tour of China and other "exotic" places).

My photo is at Terayama Temple, which is up a narrow mountain road in the town I work. My attempt is to recreate a 19th century sepia photo. Unfortunately, there was no one around in period costume to include in the photo. I used a slow speed and the smallest aperture available.

In RAWShooter Essentials, I played around with saturation and hue before saving it as a TIF, adjusted levels and contrast slightly, and desaturated it. Then I applied a High Pass filter (actually, I was looking to find a sepia filter in PS Elements but liked the look of High Pass when I did it ... I hope it's acceptable in the rules -it's applied to the whole image, at any rate). Not finding sepia in Elements, I saved it again as TIF then used the sepia filter in Picasa2.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Technical: I dont think I can make out much after all the postprocessing done with this photo but it seems to be well exposed photo. The camrea work and angle of capture is good.

Aesthetic: Well...this is pleasing picture. Though this really is honest attempt to capture the style of the photographer, but I feel (if there was no restriction of being very rigid to style) the image is little flat.

Challenge:Offcoure- this fits the challenge and is very honest attempt to pay tribute.

Conclusion:Again, I dont know how can I really comment on the photo which is tribute to someone who clicked with limited resources. I feel a little more "depth" would have helped. Sapia in picasa tends ro make image flat. Also the contrast within temple seems to more than the overall contrast of the image. But this is certainly an above average compostion. I did not voted for this challenge but would have given around 6..which is inline with the avg score also.

I'm by no means expert in area of photography. My comments are purely based on my limited understanding of technology and art behind digital photography. Apart from doing detailed evaluation of your submission, my intent is to learn different styles of photography by critically evaluating selective submissions. If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via email or PM.

Wish you a great day!

wow, you've made this look genuinely like an old Japanese albumen print.

maybe a little heavy on the dodge for me, the centre seems a little too bright, but beautiful and a perfect tribute

It's interesting how you located this building in the middle as opposed to having this in one of the thirds. I think this would have been more effective had the whole image been uniform in contrast.

The house looks like it didn't get the same treatment as the rest of the photo?

Beato's work is very historically significat in china and Japan and his use of glass negatives and hand-coloured albumen prints you have faithfully reproduced here. Your singling out of the little house and the colour diffusion of the periphery is very well done
