I like how the bright colours of the woman's clothing on the clothesline dispels the dreariness of the scene.

Very interesting and tells a story. I wonder hoe this looks in B&W?

I don't know why such scenes of poverty seem to make the best photographs, but tihs is no exception. I would suggest cropping in on the bottom half to eliminate the featureless and blown out sky. The lower half exposure is spot on as is sharpness. Colors work great and it's an emotional scene. Nice work! 8 - would be 10 if not for the top!

Oh my gosh. My heart goes out to that woman! Thought provoking shot!

I saw this place when I was in Honduras, no running water, two goats and a 2m satellite dish. Universal priorities.

Wow! Powerfull capture. This is something you should not see in this day and age. Do I see a housing development in the distance?

Awesome - what a great way to show that all cities aren't the same. The inclusion of the lady really makes this shot - it includes life into the mix.

So nice to see a different view point on city life (compared to the big cities), even though these places should've exist in our time. 8

This saddens me to see the life of the other side of city life, as we should have by now improved this situation. Good image done well...

Great photo. Very dramatic, with the paradoxes inherent in the scenery....the title adds to this. Where is it?

sky is a blown but it could have been cropped out without distracting from the force of the image

Technically imperfect, but I'd rather look at this shot than 99% of the other standard views. This says so much. And is that a satellite TV dish in the middle of ths shot? What a crazy world.

A very powerful subject. I wish it was more dramatic in color, because as it is it looks a bit flat with a very dull sky.

Powerful image. I'll be curious to see where this is.

I think this would be stronger if more of the sky was cropped out. That would pull out the details of the subject more.

This photo reminds me of how truly blessed I am. Sadly, I have family members who live in areas that look almost like this. Good luck to you.

you might be getting low scores from some people, but the reality is that this is 'city life' for some people. although the composition doesnt do much for me i like the realism presented here...

Unfortunately places like this do exist. You have captured the mood and essence of the neighbourhood.

Great shot and choice of perspective. A scene you can't brush past. Possibly crop a bit of sky(?) - not sure. Love those colors on the washline. I'd be interested in seeing other shots of this scene. Nice work. Thanks.

I gave you a 9 - striking image. Would have been a 10 for me if the top had been cropped just a little more. Good luck in the challenge!

Like the inquisitive penetration of the camera here into the squalor but compositionally doesn't seem all that interesting

Yes, that's a ghastly side of city life in many countries. This particular scene, when examined past the evidence of squalor and misery, has some interesting details. The woman is managing to provide clean clothes for her family, even here. She also appears to have two bathtubs (both outdoor), and a satellite TV antenna suspended above the yard. Plus she has her house number prominently displayed, although for whose benefit it is difficult to imagine ... she probably entertains few casual visitors. The flag on her roof is that of Serbia & Montenegro, so it may be that this disgraceful mess is a hopefully temporary artifact of that region's splendid history of ethnic harmony and tolerance.
It's a very sad vision of city life, and you did well to bring it to us.

Wow, what a compelling shot! My favourite of the challenge so far, but IMO it doesn't meet the challenge. It'll be interesting to see how this shot scores.
