Thank you very much, Heather and "Macro", for taking the time to comment.
I did try it with more light on the amoeba, but decided that didn't make sense.... something floating out there wouldn't look like that.
I KNEW that the darkness would end up an issue, but it just HAD to be that way *g*, though a more transparent blob could have been interesting!
This is one of those cases where there IS no right and wrong.
I completely respect your opinions and appreciate your time.
It was good to hear your views even though I still like it just the way it is - simply an issue of different personal tastes :-) |

*Critique Club*
I see you received some nice comments after the challenge, as well as during the challenge, so I hope I can offer something new here.
Per your request, here is your in depth critique from the Critique Club.
While being a very clever shot for the challenge, it's just not that visually appealing to me. The amoeba looks more like one of those fake vomit things you buy at gag stores. You know what I'm talking about? That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this photo. You did do a nice job capturing the similar look of the amoeba (//www.3dham.com/microgallery/amoebab.html for those who don't know what amoeba's look like) and it definately represents spaceamoeba's name for sure. It's too bad that you couldn't somehow get a clear amoeba. That might have been interesting as well.
I like how you did the background. When I saw this in the voting, I had assumed that it was taken above a computer monitor or something similar. Very creative photography in my opinion.
Now, why didn't it score what you had hoped for? For me, it would be the lack of visual appeal. The amoeba looks a bit out of focus, and (while my monitor is just fine) I wish there were a bit more light on the amoeba. The focus seems to be on the stars rather than on the amoeba, and I wish it were the other way around at least, or have everything similar focus.
I like the placement of the amoeba in relation to the stars. The 'negative space' to the left works nicely composition wise.
Overal neat idea for the challenge. ~Heather~ |

I gave this a 5. I liked the concept and composition and it was a good fit for the username. My main 'criticism' was/would be that it appeared flat, contrast/pp/something seemed a little too 'tweaked' to the point it started to verge on digital art, in a way. My monitor is usually fairly good, but this does seem a fraction dark, but then that is presumably what you have gone for with the 'space' theme. Perhaps trying to create more distance/depth between the 'amoeba' and the 'space/stars', and either more detail or a lighter color on the 'amoeba' to try to make it 'pop' more, may have made this better in my opinion. |

Thanks Robert. I realize that SOME of the lousy score has to do with people not liking the photo.
However, I am convinced that at least some of it is due to
A) badly calibrated monitors that didn't show enough detail and
B) some people obviously not understanding the word "amoeba".
And those two contributors upset me. |

It's kind of sad that this did so poorly. I didn't think it was totally brilliant or anything, photographically, but it scored high in my eyes for originality and a certain funky humor. I'd have expected it to finish in, say, the 50's.
But, then, I scored a 6.2 on my stare at the sun entry and that was only good for 41st, so the voters were certainly being amped-up in this challenge :-) |

:-) I have no idea what that slimy "amoeba" stuff is, but you get points for humor and meeting the username. Bumping up a point after a second look. |

awesome amoeba. I like how you included the dark spots to simulate... oh what are they... the nucleus and vacuole? good thing I'm not a biologist cuz I don't remember the terminology... if you could have kept the stars in focus, I think this would be even better. |

Would have liked to see more light on the amoeba shape. |

This looks like a picture of a childs painting. I"m not saying it is and I feel horrible if you spent a lot of time setting it up, but it came across really childish to me. |
