thanks for all the great comments. Just to let you know, the "circle" was burned, and I really didnt mean for it to be a "scope", but thats cool...I just wanted to focus all the attention on the subject.
Thanks again!!

Greetings from the critique club,
This is a very interesting photo that has much appeal about it. Unlike many of the comments you received I think the circle frame that is off centre is a real treat and adds a certain amount irony given the subject matter. Although I'm not real sure how you achieved it.
I like the candid moment you have caught here it really gives the viewer something to ponder what the soldier is writing and who is the letter for, surely a tender moment for a loved one.
It is a shame that the highlights in the hand and face area have been blown out which has caused a great loss in detail but as you mentioned in your notes it was your first attempt and for a first attempt it is very good.
I hope you continue to improve and enjoy the DPC community and wish you well in future challenges and please keep mtrying to be different it is what keeps us as individuals and your frame in this image was a great idea.

I like the 'sights' effect although I think it could have softer edges. Not enough shadow for me. 8. |

Interesting framing, I'd be interested in learning how you did it. Good photo too. |

Fit Challenge Criteria: 2/2
Color/Contrast: 0/2
Composition: 1/2
Photo Quality: 0/2
My Subjective Affinity: 1/2
This is a great idea, but it lookds a little too photoshopped. The contrast is too much, and there is a lot of grain in the photo also. I would've also tilted the photo a little to the left, as the soldier looks like he is falling over a bit. |

Nice picture, but I'm not crazy about the circle cutout. |

Apart from my political opinion about the US Army i will judge the photo as a 4
The circle framing is unpleasent, and the face is partly burned

looks like we're looking at him through a sniper scope? The circle is very disturbing in this context |

All though the whites are a bit too bright and washing out his hands, I like your concept. |
