There hasn't been any rain around here for a few days and getting a butterfly to sit still while firing away with a water hose is impossible. I came up with the idea of mimicking rain by etching streaks in a piece of glass. I focused on the butterfly and then placed the glass between the camera and the subject. After many experimental attempts at distance and focus I came up with this image which I felt was the best of the bunch. I will be interested to see how many viewers suspect that it is not real water!
The final image was cropped, increased contrast, slightly increased saturation, sharpened and run through neat image.

Nice workaround for lack of rain... the keen observer might have noticed the single line with the bend in it which might give away the 'cheat' I didn't notice that during voting but did think that the shot looked unnatural (i.e. I haven't seen a buttefly sit still in a downpur before!)

Great work!

Sadly, my predictions are failing lately. Good finish nonetheless.

Boy, this is impressive. Composition, shading, light, the wetness of the butterfly particularly the irridescent blue/gray towards the tail.

Definitely a top ten if not a ribbon. Curious to read the details of the shot. Great job.

Almost looks surreal. Nice capture and clarity. The rain and the butterfly seem to fight for attention to my eye but otherwise well done. 8

Recommended for a DQ, sorry to hear that, but I always vote these a little higher. Nice effect with the rain. I hope you post the details so we can see how you did this. Good Luck 9

Great butterfly, I like the colours. Very nicely focused. I don't know how you got the 'rain' streaks, and while they make the shot fit the challenge, they don't look natural at all. I think this is a great shot on its own, the streaks detract form it, IMO.

My favorite butterfly. This photo is absolutely beautiful. Would love to know the detatils. Should certainly be able to sell prints. So far this is in my top two picks for this challenge.

This is a gorgeous image! The detail in the butterfly is very impressive, especially for a rainy day shot! Love the colors & the blurred rain makes a wonderful effect!

I guess by being validated it means that it is within the rules. I can't believe you got a shot like this during the "rain" competition. 9 from me.

Wow... Just got the "This photo has been validated." message on this viewing (probably the 4th). It's a phenomenally good shot. Love the composition and colors. I "hope" that this is real rain (and not PSed in), but even if it's not, it's a fantastic shot. Very well done. I think this is a ribbon contender. 10
