Thanks!

To answer Strikeslip's question, the tiger was real. He was about 5 metres away through a (scratched) plastic window, and this is pretty much a full frame reduced down to entry size. A full size crop at 640 pixels barely includes the whole of the tiger's eye!

As for DoF - it was very narrow partly necessary due to the backlighting and low light conditions, combined with a slow zoom at full extension. But it was partly intentional - it was my intention to isolate the eye as a focal point using DoF.

The grain is also intentionally retained (I like it) except in the eye (again to draw attention), though the slight discolouration in the bottom left is not intended.

I must admit, I am a bit disappointed not to hit a 6 with this (though it started at 5.1 after 30 votes, and I am pleased it got as far as 5.8 by the end of the week, still).

You woz robbed! You know what I thought from my voting comment! I certainly thought I would see this with a ribbon. Never mind!

82nd place!?!?!? Surely everyone is completely insane! This belongs with the ribboners! >:(

P.S. I guess you won't be seeing anything else from me, as I must now jump off a high tower somewhere. :-(
(j/k!)

Well done Matt.
I guess that technical perfection doesn't count for much against "Ooooooooooh" appeal on this site. I agree with slippy if thats any consolation.

This is definitely the Blue Ribbon shot right here. I'm sure of it. If you don't win the Blue Ribbon I'm going to find a high tower and jump off of it! I would tell you how amazing this shot is, but I'm sure you've already had a hundred comments to that effect. I'm even having trouble believing this is an actual, living tiger. Of course, if it's a stuffed tiger I'd want to take my 10 back. [10]

The eye is excellent, but the noise in the cheek and nose are very distracting.

His eye looks like a bubble. Good idea, this very close-up portrait. Well done.

A good attempt at this difficult subject. Not quite on, but the image in the cornea is wonderful.

Very nice, a little grainy on the left half, some noise reduction would do wonders for this shot (8)

This is just a little too close for my taste. Without the title it would be difficult to tell what this is.

Since I am lacking in technical skills, I cannot give helpful comments. I am strictly a photo buff who is trying to improve, but as to telling you what is wrong or right, I am in no position to say. I am simply voting based on whether I like the picture or not. Sorry, maybe someday I will be able to give helpful advice

Beautifully composed shot, but IMHO when a shot is this close-up, the DOF has to be really sharp. This is a little blurry & grainy, while just around the eyes is in pretty good focus - at least on my monitor.

Nice eye shot. Great macro. The fur on the outside edges seems a bit oversaturated.
