i personally like it as is, it shows so much love between mum and son....that i would never have 'looked' at the background... my first reaction was to look and smile....
great work and congrats on your highest score.... |

Thank you to everyone that commented on this image. I really appreciate the feedback. Just wanted to add a few comments of my own. Yes, blurring the background would have improved the image, but I did not take this to fit the challenge. I did not even know there was a family challenge when I took this. This was a strictly impromtu session. I went to see my best friend and her son's new home, their first home. I suggested that she take a picture in her new backyard, of her new back yard. So the scenery was just as important to her, to mark a very important time in her life. I agree about the reflection on her lip, hadn't even thought of that as it it didn't bother me or her. So, thank you for your comments and making this my highest scoring image in a challenge, yet. |

Since this was an Advanced editing challenge, I'd have strongly considered making a couple of masks and blutting the far background quite a bit, and the tree somewhat less so, to create both a feeling of depth and to provide a less-distracting BG for the portrait., and cloning out/burinign in what looks like a bright reflection on her lip. This would somewhat simulate the effect of opening the aperture to a very wide setting--not possible with all cameras or under all conditions though.
Pose and lighting/tones in the portrait are wonderful. |

The focus seems to be on the tree in the background. Since advanced editing was allowed for this challenge, cloning out the glare on the woman's lipstick would have improved the shot. |

Beautiful pose, lighting and skin colours are lovely and the hand positions are so touching! Great composition. I'm not sure if it's possible with your camera but would love to have seen a slightly shallower dof to blurr the b/g and bring total focus on the family. Great family portrait. |

This picture is a little bit flat. Boosting the contrast would really help it pop out at the viewer |

I love this photograph! The tree on the left and right are a bit distracting, I would also consider cropping the top 10% off but this would definately be hanging on my wall!! Great job! 7 |

nice focus. nice lighting. looks like you used a flash that was very mellow and definitely enhanced the pic for me, though the reflection on her lips is slightly distracting, and draws me away from their eyes, which i feel is the best part. i hate the background you've chosen. |

This is one of my favorite family portraits in this challenge...the lighting is very good, their expressions are wonderful and I like the mother's hands holding her son's hands: it gives a very human feel to this portrait and a uniqueness.

Two beautiful people, I would have used a wider appature to blur the background and focus even more attention on them. |

A very good photo indeed. However their are alot of contrasting colors here, the orange, green, black, and then the tree, and it doesnt seem to have any certain theme <-----Im not sure thats the right word, just no colaberation of all the colors. Still a very good photo. |

if you have taken this with a bigger aperture and thus a smaller depth of field, this would have shot up in scores. |

Very beautiful and soft skin tones. Excellent clarity and sharpness. Pleasant background...adds nicely to the mood without competing with subjects. Like it a lot. |

Nice light, lovely colors. I think it might be a little better without the tree trunk and perhaps with a blurred background. |

Very nice image. I like it a lot. Seems that so many folks went with off-track ideas about family.... this is the kind of shot I was looking for. |

Very nice skin tones. Unposed, natural expressions. I might crop out all or part of the hands (is a little distracting to me) and some of the background - maybe even blur it a little but the capture of the subject is quite pleasant. |
