Greetings from the Critique Club,

Composition:
This is a wonderful composition. The leading lines formed by the compass work very effectively to pull the viewer's eye to the pi symbol on the slide rule. These leading lines seem even more powerful because they are so much different than the horizontal lines on the slide rule that run through the entire photograph. Black and white works very well here also.

Technical:
Excellent depth of field (DOF) -- the pi symbol is in sharp focus, with the numbers on the slide rule being less in focus as you look higher up on the slide rule. This effect places even more emphasis on the pi symbol.

Meet the Challenge Objective?
Yes, meets the challenge objective very very well. Excellent photograph and deserving of the high placement it received in this challenge. Great work kiwiness!

Good shot. It looks really good. I like how soft it is. I'm thinking John Setzler.

Simple, straightforward, and a good shot. I don't like the small white border on the inside because it blends in with the white on the bottom and right, but not top and left.

Great shot. Nice set up, well taken photo. Greyscale is the way to go with this one.

I could have taken a shot like this if I'd thought of it...

Nice black and white. The composition is a bit too formal for me... everything so well aligned. It suits the subject matter, but it's dull.

Excellent focus, detail, and DOF. Very clean shot. Love the black and white, brings out the metal appearance. Cleaning up those specks on the wheel, etc. later is going to make this awesome.

This photo, effective in B/W, really communicates the scientific "magicalness" of pi to me. Suberb composition, I'm glad I have to look, for just a moment, to find the pi symbol.
