I've wanted “this” picture of the baby and me so this challenge was the perfect motivation to take it. I used the tripod and timer. I really wanted one of him nursing but he was over me getting up and down to set the timer/take the picture. I have probably 75 pictures that are out of focus due to the movement of the rocking chair.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. My picture has the baby in it of course, but since this was a self portrait of my current best side (a mother) I didn't want to focus on the baby.

I really wanted one of him nursing but he was over it and biting me LOL.

I love this image because somrthing very natural has been captured here. There is an overall easeness which lends itself to projection. Melissa, you work is very good.

I love this picture....nursing is one of the most rewarding experiences a mother can have. I nursed my oldest only for a few months but I nursed my youngest until he was 3 (everyone had a heart attack)and it's amazing how much closer you get with your child... I only have the two but I would of had a gaggle if things had been different :)

Very natural shot all round - the light, experessions of love - and the composition is great. There's a tangible bridge between you both, formed only by your eyes. As good a reason as any to find a shot for a challenge.

I'm a sucker for soon to be moms (pregnant) and new moms. The love is captured so well in both mom and baby. Great exposure and light. 9

Beautiful portrait- one of my top 15. Wish I could see a little more of the baby's face, because the expression looks like one in a million. The window light was a good choice, but something about the dark shadow on the side of your face looks unnatural (cropping through the cheek would solve most of that). Still very nice. 8

A beautiful portrait, composed and photographed with restraint. I love the way you just sneaked in enough of the reason for your happiness to tell us the story, but not enough to steal our attention away from the subject (you are the taller one, right?). 7

i don't know anything about portraiture, so i'm using your image to try to figure out what i think i would or wouldn't do in this situation, as well as what i notice and get out of your image.

well, i don't think i'll be able to duplicate this ;-)

this really is an amazing image for a self-portrait. the lighting is simply fabulous, and the range of tonalities is wonderful. the composition, focus, and expressions are all right where you'd want them. great job! good luck with this!

You have captured the emotion beautifully in this shot, the natural light from the window works well to emphasise that in my opinion. 9

Everytime I see this I bump it up again. Now we're at the top. I love the joy your image evokes. So you're hitting my "my youngest is 9 and the rest are teenagers, boy I miss babies" chord pretty good.

The framing of the baby is great, enough to tell the story, while keeping you as the main subject. I love it. Very well done.

If you're going to take a picture of mother and baby I think you really need to be able to see the baby. This is too tight a framing for my tastes. Otherwise I like the light and the duotone. Might have been better with your eyes open too. 7

The tones are good and the lighting is perefect for the situation. More of the child's face might have improved this but the look on you face is excellent. (9)

a sweet moment of you and the baby. I wish the crop wasn't so tight so we could see more of the baby, but you have a very loving and lovely expression.

Very beautiful portrait that captures your feeling of joy and pride very well. The lighting is very nice. Two things I might change if I had the option is the very upper left corver of the photo, and I might show just a bit more of the babies face so there is more interaction going on between you both. Solid 8.

This is a fantastic mother and baby portrait, you can almost sense the bond between you, very natural and the light in the window sets the scene well. Its rare not to need to see the eyes to feel emotion and I take it this is on your wall already? (bumped2)

Lovely, honest and certainly very pleasing to look at. The gratifying smile is at once contagious and the framing is soothing. Bumping up.

I love the crop on this one. In the thumbnail, it just looks like a girl without a shirt. Viewed at full size and seeing the baby in the lower right corner explains your wonderful smile, and makes the image magical in a way. I have three boys, and I had considered doing a group shot of them as my 'indirect' self portrait. It was my first and favorite idea, but I didn't think it would go over well with the voters. I'm glad to see someone included their child in their shot. That sort of makes it a Self Portrait and a Half. Congrats on a wonderful image.

Bold and beautiful. A tighter crop from top, and a more uniform background would lead the eye to the subject even better. And that seems like a beautiful baby hidden there!
