cliche ... how can i not participate in cliche when 4 of the top 5 photos in my profile are flowers! :) anyway, i had recently read this article in the december 2002 issue of photography monthly about flower photography with a very shallow DOF, just focusing on one part of the flower. i thought that was intriguing. i couldn't get the DOF quite as narrow as i wanted, but think i got close. i'm hoping the general DPC voter will like it even though only part of the photo is in focus. i am definitely happy with my result (that hasn't happened in a while), and will play around with this concept some more.

as for processing, i adjusted the levels very slightly, cropped a bit tighter on the flower, resized, unsharpen mask, and added the frame. this photo looks very similar to how it came out of the camera, which i feel is also an achievement.

my biggest problem (as usual) was to come up with a title. ;)

This is a beautiful shot. I love the contrasting background, and the border really brings out the color of the flower. Terrific macro and show of detail.

I must say that this shot is an honor to review. It's just perfect to me and I can't really say too much but will try.
Franziska Lang is the 'Flower Master'. I personally like shallow DOF in many different shots. It works very well here.
Your lighting is wonderful....I don't know where it's coming from and I like that very much. The colors are complimentary and appealing. This shot is just rich, full and lovely. Perfection.

Interetsing and subtle frame enhances the 3d look...hope you don't mind if I steal the technique! What color was the flower originally?

beautiful shot! i can definitly see this image hanging in my house! great colors and detail!

I think your choice of DOF makes this shot for me. If all were sharp, it would just be another flower picture. Perfect background choice! These colors work very well together. Lighting is perfect, with no shadows. Is that a blue card or sky? Feels 'studio' to me, so I'm guessing blue card/paper/material. Excellent detail at the stem and the shape of the petals, with bright red on top and pink on bottom makes for an interesting composition and shape. Very nice! 8

beautiful! the colors are so complementary, and the detail is great. I am wishing for better dof on the foreground petals.. it is a bit too short. lighting, contrast, etc. all wonderful! High score!

I think that by having a blue background brings alot of intrest to this picture. also I think that you were the right distance away for this picture. Nice Work.

the two tones show very good

Very cool picture. I like the different perspective on the flower, with more emphasis on the stem. I find that the DOF is a little too narrow. I would have liked to see more of the petals in focus, especially the closest ones. The flower on the blue background is great. As is your border. I am not a border fan, but that one works really well.

Ordinary flower, yet fantastic choice of perspective and background / border colour. Way to pull the best out of this one. 9

I think the focus should have concentrated on the petals and not the stem.

Very interesting DOF, I wonder how you managed it. I really like this photo, so clean and bright - the blue background really finishes the photo for me.

Nice perspective!!! Great color & background. You have managed to make a cliche original!!!

I love the blue background and the DOF. The perfect focus of the stem and half of the leaves, with the other half of the leaves a little blurry gives a GREAT effect! I'd like to see a little less cropping tho. 8.

Gerber Daisys are such beautiful flowers and this one you've lit very nicely. It's an unusual angle but shows off the delicacy AND the strength of the flower.

The colors and contrast are nice. The focus is a bit confusing...too unfocused on the center petals. The sharpness of the ones in focus is great.

NIce shot! The colors are smashing! I like how only the petals on the sides are in focus. I dont like the frame. The colors are what did it for me the most. Radical shot!

Very pretty, nice macro. The border does alot for this photo. I like your angle on the flower. Too bad the petals closest are not focused well.

This is great. I think I would prefer to have seen more of the top of the petals in the middle section.

Very pretty colors nice composition and light.
02/03/2003 09:42:26 AM
Beautiful colors! Excellent lighting. I like the composition tho I think I'd rather see a perspective from a bit lower or a bit higher instead of right from the side. Perfect exposure. 10
