Originally gave it a 4, but I moved it up to a 5.
I like the foggy look to the image. I think it would have been a better image had it been oriented landscape and a little of the water out of the image. Or if staying portrait, less water and more sky. |

6...there are boats here, and there are boats in the book, so I guess that's a connection. Though it's a choppy sea, it's a calm image. I find the subdued palette of grays very soothing. |

Comment Challenge. I really like the look of fog/mist around the boats. Not sure these quite compare to the majestic sailing ships of yore, but you've done a great job of capturing a nautical feel, and the size of the ship does not impact the courage of her captain. |

I suppose that this is the father's shipping lines.
Very delicate image, well suited for a happy ending. Very clever processing and wonderful tones.

Fits the novel well enough. Not quite perfect, but hey - not bad either.
The image itself leaves something to be desired - it seems flat, and just isn't striking. Despite that, it does fit well and isn't badly deficient in any manner.

Your title is infinitely smarter than the people on these boats.
i could do with about 40-50% less sky above them and quite possibly a masked layer to increase contrast for the boats/people from the rain storm this image is clearly in
a 6 from me |

Great shot. Looks like rough seas. |

Courageous you to take the camera out :) The picture would have benefited is the boats were clearly separated. I would have cropped a bit tighter to the left and a bit more on the bottom. 5 |

I like the subtle variations in the greys and whites. There is a strong tie to the story. I can almost feel the chill from the rain. 7 |

Lacking any period schooners to shoot, a modern sloop of two or three may be a reasonable substitute with some weather thrown in to provide seafaring atmosphere. But the overall effect lacks any sense of the spirit of the book's narrative of a rich kid's rescue by a fishing boat and his coming of age tribulations as reluctant member of the rescuer's crew. Visually, the shot lacks drama as the boaters here seem to be passively waiting for the weather to change or giving up for the day. A tighter crop might provide more detail and sense of involvement in whatever activity there is. Regrettably, only the weather itself has any interest because of the natural tones and color in the photo. The image might have been better as a spare, gray seascape devoid of boats to represent the sense of isolation of the kid in the story. 5 |

Good fitting title.
But a gray picture. I would have liked to had seen some color pop... perhaps the yellow on the first boat... the reds on the second...etc.
Gave this a 5 |

Certainly looks like you'd have to be keen to be out there. Courageous, I don't know, maybe more unlucky. Harvey would have been at home. 5. |

It does take courage to be out in that weather! Great shot for the book. Wish it was a little more processed (more contrast and perhaps more dark/ominous water and sky -- my preference). But still top 10 for me! |

Whoa that's ugly weather :-) I generally like this, though I feel the execution's not getting all it could out of the image. A little more structure and darkening of the edges, would enhance the mood I think, make it a bit more intense.
I'm giving this one a 6. |
