Challenge: Transitions (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G1
Location: Fishers Cemetary - Vancouver, WA
Date: Apr 18, 2002
Aperture: f2.2
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/20
Date Uploaded: Apr 20, 2002

I took this at a nearby cemetery. My intent was to capture an image which was both a metaphor for transition as well as containing visual transitional elements. In PS6 I cropped a bit, reduced saturation and changed the white point.

Thanks for the comments all. Very much enjoyed and appreciated.

Yes, yes, when I saw the 'Ground Up' challenge after posting this pic, I thought "Crap! I know what most of the comments are going to say!'

Some public responses to a few of the comments (not that anyone really gives a hoot)...

I did not think the grass would annoy people as much as it did. The intent there was, as Terrentius nailed it, to give the perpective of looking up at one's own headstone. The Grass also provided a way of obscuring some of the text, which I believed added an element of mystery (good call Gordon) and also helped to frame the date which, as reflected in the title, is the reference to the transition theme - the year this person passed away, transitioning into another state.

Ahh well, maybe I thought about it too much...

As for the 'cutout' sky, this picture was taken on a typically overcast and grey Washington day. That caused the sky to be pretty washed out to begin with. After desaturating, I adjusted the white point so that the sky was a clean white.

Thanks again!

focus across the depth of field is very good. Still great detail on the top of the tombstone.
04/28/2002 04:04:00 PM
It's like you knew what the next challenge was going to be!!
04/28/2002 02:28:00 PM
i wish I could read more of the text on the gravestone, nice hint of green
04/27/2002 06:07:00 PM
I'd like this even better as an antry for the next challenge ("ground up").
04/27/2002 01:29:00 PM
shame you couldn't resubmit this one next week.
04/27/2002 11:02:00 AM
My only concern with this is that it has been cut out but it could be because of a cloudy white sky. Anyway, I really like the pic, it would work for the current "from the ground up" challenge too.
04/27/2002 08:04:00 AM
black and white suits this picture well. would be a good shot for this week's challenge as well.
04/26/2002 12:25:00 PM
It's a great photo but it is an after state and not a transition from one state to another.
04/25/2002 10:51:00 AM
very original
04/25/2002 07:41:00 AM
how you were able to get that depth of field, I will never know. Fabulous shot!
04/24/2002 10:39:00 AM
I think this would have been better without the grass in the front. I would have liked to have seen the actual words on the stone
04/24/2002 04:07:00 AM
I really like this angle. This would be a great shot for "the ground up" challenge. I'm upgrading this to a 10.
04/24/2002 03:17:00 AM
good composition, focus, etc. and could have been an entry in Ground Up.
04/24/2002 02:55:00 AM
nice angle :)
04/23/2002 07:10:00 PM
I like this photo.
Could you tell me is it featuring rebirth?
It looks like the point of view of a "Corpse"
climbing up from his grave.
04/23/2002 07:01:00 PM
You did a good job focusing on the challenge... so many changes in this photo.
04/23/2002 04:23:00 PM
Incredible angle. I like how the washed ou sky contrasts the gray hues of the rest of the shot.
04/23/2002 01:18:00 PM
Nice photo.
04/23/2002 12:49:00 PM
I think you were a week early... Seriously, nice composition.
04/23/2002 07:39:00 AM
I like what you've done with the blades of grass, though at the same time they're a bit distracting. Maybe focusing on the grass and not the tombstone would've made more of an impact -- but then you'd lose your transition...hmm.
04/23/2002 06:12:00 AM
interesting image
04/22/2002 05:18:00 PM
did you realize there is grass in the photo...but seriously it hurts more that helps i think because the grass becomes the focal point, and the grass is blurry, and it is blocking the stone
04/22/2002 04:50:00 PM
Great shot. Love the perspective.
04/22/2002 02:39:00 PM
This might have been a good one for the new challenge ...
04/22/2002 12:06:00 PM
I was hoping I would see a shot like this... good work!
04/22/2002 09:47:00 AM
good job.
04/22/2002 09:37:00 AM
very cool angle.
04/22/2002 09:31:00 AM
Nice angle and composition.
04/22/2002 09:09:00 AM
This would be excellent for the next challenge.
04/22/2002 08:48:00 AM
great photo
04/22/2002 08:41:00 AM
The stone is composed very nicely. I don't like the grass though. Are you going for a "raised from the dead" look? The grass is more of a distraction then a help.
04/22/2002 06:44:00 AM
I believe this is a good representation of a life transition. I also think you did a wonderful job with the photo.
04/22/2002 06:42:00 AM
nice shot. did you know something about next week's challenge?
04/22/2002 06:19:00 AM
good angle and I like the b/w.
04/22/2002 04:06:00 AM
whats the transition? death?
04/22/2002 03:07:00 AM
good attempt at an unusual angle - you could re enter it for the 'ground up' challenge :) Grass is a bit too heavy I think though, would have been a good frame but obscures too much in my opinion, though it does add mystery by hiding the names.
04/25/2002 08:55:00 AM
Seems like this meets the next week's challenge better than it does this week's...
04/23/2002 10:01:00 AM
This might be better for "From the Ground Up" challenge. :) I love this picture, though.
04/23/2002 09:39:00 AM
good shot - would suit next challenge
04/21/2002 11:06:00 PM
The grass ruined this shot, but take it again and submit it for the next challenge though
