Critique Club Comment :o)
Composition:
This is a great little candid wildlife shot, well lit by the sunlight. The bird fills the frame, which means there's no doubt as to the subject of the shot! I'm in two minds regarding the tilt - rotating the shot anti-clockwise a few degrees might help add balance to the shot, but then again it'd lose the charactor of the bird.
Since the food in the bird's beak is the subject of the shot (as per the title), it may have helped to not crop/zoom in so tightly on the bird, so that the head and beak fall onto a more natural focal point - the eye first goes to the green feathers, rather than the food. One thing you have picked up well is the colours of the plumage, and the greens, reds, and greys are all very bold and clear.
Background:
Since this is a candid, it's hard to control what's in the background, but the shallow DoF means that there isn't much to distract from the main subject. It's also darker than the bird, which helps create a good contrast.
Camera Work:
Since you've not provided your exposure settings (aperture, ISO, shutter), I can't be as much help as I'd like on this shot. The background is quite grainy, which suggests that you used quite a high ISO setting - I always try to use as low an ISO as possible, since grain is very hard to remove without compromising on other details.
The focus is reasonable, but could do with being just a little bit sharper. However, since this'd highlight the grain of the background more, I can understand why you didn't do this. The DoF is also reasonable, but perhaps if it could have been a bit shallower, so that the background is blurred a touch more.
Post-Processing:
Again, since you've not provided any details, I can only guess as to the post processing that you've done to this shot. One important thing I must mention is that the image is only 69Kb, out of the maximum 150Kb - you should always try to get as close to 150Kb as possible, since the smaller the file, the more the details are lost to the compression.
In addition, I'd be curious to see what this photo looks like in B&W, as I think it could work quite well, since this would probably enhance the texture of the plumage even more.
My Opinion:
Does this image meet the challenge? Yes, but it's not immediately obvious that the object in the bird's beak is what's being referred to in the title, and your score may have suffered because of that. I personally quite like this shot, and would rate it as above average, but that grainyness keeps it from getting the top marks. |

The lighting is quite good. The shallow DOF works well to bring the subject into isolation (shame there wasn't more colour difference as well though). Personally I think it is cropped a little too tight at the top (and perhaps right edge also), but good otherwise. |

HEHE.. Nice subject. The excess noise in this photo could of been removed by using a program such as neat image. jgillard6 |

I like this image very much. The lighting is very good - giving great sheen and colour to both the bird and the rock. The facial detail is fun and well captured - food held just so in his mouth, eyes sharp and aware of his surroundings. What really makes it for me is the background - I think this is an incredible use of shallow DOF - and the angle of the rock behind him makes the image much more dynamic than one might expect from a centred portrait of a pidgeon! I love the way I can see detail and lichen/ dirt at his feet but only what are like brushstrokes further back. Only minor distraction is that orange smudge towards top left and I don't really mind it that much!

Great close up. I love how you filled the frame. Nice use of shallow depth of field. Jacko. 9 |

One of my favorites. Look at the red on the feet. Look at the browns, green, red, and yellow in the neck, the red and grey in the beak, the orange and black in the eyes, and the unevenness and grey mixed with brown sidewalk. A good photo is clear enough to see all this. And the croppin is great. Not fair feeding to get him to pose. Trying to find a new way to say "This is a fantastic photo worth an 8" PTL |

I don't like the tight crop of the whole bird. Pretty well taken photo though. - Inspzil |

Cool shot! The bird is in good focus, just wish the background was blurred a bit more instead of being so noisy. Good capture of an animal! 7.
Take my comments for what they are worth for I am just a novice with a new camera. Dodo |
