I think it's a great ideea to make a all-time top 100 or top 50 or something like that.in this challenge should compete all the 1st place from all challenges and than make the votes to see the best picture ever.I know it ain't the same category but it would be interesting i think! |

You don't think we have enough to vote on? I think if we did that, we'd have to just have something where you pick the first, second, and third place pictures in lieu of actually rating all the pictures. When someone is giving 60% 10's, that's not so much fun anymore. The other downside is it turns into a popularity contest more than anything. And lastly, I'm dead against it since I don't have a blue ribbon and couldn't compete :)

I'm not a winner either. Not even close! But I think it would kind be fun to have a challenge like this possibly at the end of every year or may twice a year in june & december.
I agree with inspzil that instead of voting for all of them, I would rather just pic the top 3-5 that I like best and put them in the order I think they deserve to be in. |

I don't think its a good idea either but for other reasons, however, who says it would all be 10s? Some of the winners I haven't even given an 8 too. I already have a favorite of all winning photos...

The way my voting patterns go, I wouldn't say I give all 10's to the winners. I simply don't give that many 10's. But in most of the challenges, by a large majority, the ribbon photos are my highest rated pictures.
But if you gave photos 9's in first place, why wouldn't you give them a 9 again? The only conceiveable reason to me is challenge relavance. A good photo is a good photo is a good photo. There are some pictures that are great that did not do as well in the challenges because there was some question about being good for the challenges.
I love this picture. It is probably my favorite picture in DPC. It didn't do very well in the challenge of Fauna. Horsepower .
I still really don't think this is a good idea. I think just keeping track of them by number of times chosen favorite is a perfectly acceptable way to rate the photos. Putting them side by side like this is unnecessary. Personally, I have enough to vote on. I don't think I need any more.
Good day folks - Bob

I don't really see the point, as it's already possible to go to 'Photos' and 'Browse' and ask it to show you only the highest rated photos overall, from all competitions, ever.

Although I don't think a "top 100" contest would be particularly worthwhile, the "Browse" method is not really a measurement of the site's best pictures - lots of factors, like number of voters (Table Shot, for instance) and the context of the challenges make it so they're all measured slightly differently (even though they appear to be on the same 1-10 scale).
Site favorites, too, is not really an indicator; this is often a measure of visibility. People see a good picture on that page, or see a winner on the front page, and add it.
This isn't to say that the top-rated and site favorite shots aren't some pretty incredible pictures. Whew.

In addition to previous arguments, a picture that does well in (for example) "Postcards" might not have a fair chance against (again, for example) "Despair" or "Square." Everything is contextual ... and I think, when some of the pictures are taken out of context, their ability to have great effect might be gone. |
