Playing for Work

Playing for Work

This presents an interesting commentary on the idea of work vs. play. Rhetorical question: When an action of play becomes work, does is cease being play, or should it be considered something in between? Can it be both?

Great shot. This guy's definitely playing. Interesting choice of cameral angle. Puts you more in the shoes of the rider than if it were taken straight on.

This photo captures one of the most basic acts of play. The child's action not only represents playing in the autumn leaves, but is analogous with children playing in other substances such as snow, ball pens at MacDonald's or anything else they typically submerse themselves in and grab/throw up in the air using their hands. If I could picture any person having a great time playing (whatever that might be for them), they would have this child's facial expression. Great job.

Great sports photography shot. This represents the theme of 'play' well because all 4 atheletes are focused directly on the ball. This shows that all their heads are in the game. You did a good job of freezing the play at the right moment. Sometimes a little bit of blur can be the key to good action shots, but the fact that the girls are frozen in mid air gives the photo a dynamic quality.

If this person isn't just posing, he is really 'playing'. Nice job of meeting the challenge.

I really like how the dice were captured on edge. I gives the photo a dynamic quality. It makes me feel like someone is actually playing the game (even though there are no people present in the frame), whereas if they were static, it might convey a feeling of vacancy, which does not imply 'playing'. I like the choice of black and white - makes it more dramatic.

This is a great representation of 'work' because spiders are one of the many examples found in nature of animals expending large amounts of energy and skill on construction. Like other animals, they are vulnerable during their work time due to the amount of time and attention it takes to build such intricate designs (especially considering most animals don't have opposable thumbs or technology).
