I've been fighting with getting good volleyball shots. Action, low, mixed lighting, and no flash allowed make it difficult. I really liked how this one turned out. High ISO introduced some noise, but I don't think it takes away much from the shot.

Good indoor action shot, I think you captured the right moment. The first thing I noticed was a yellowish cast. It could primarily be from the lighting, which is always tricky indoors. If you shot in RAW, you could mess around with the WB to nail it down. I also noticed a slight tilt in the horizon which distracts from the subject. With sports shots it's hard to get the right setting because you are fairly limited in your options, high ISO and wide open aperature. Maybe opening it up to 2.8 would give it less DOF, really helping the focus more clear on the players, helping them to pop, also allowing for a faster shutter speed. You're on the right track and I have to commend you for doing sports shots, they are tricky, especially indoors without breaking the bank on an incredibly huge aperature zoom lens. Keep up the good work. I hope that was helpful.

Per your request for more comments: from your description, it seems you are up against many technical challenges. I think You caught a good action moment. However, the players sort of compete with the background, so maybe what is needed is a narrower depth of field. I might also rotate the photo so the "horizon" is straight, though you would lose more of the edges. Another suggestion would be to have the ball (or maybe a key player's face) at one of the "rule of thirds" points. Right now my eye goes to the empty space in the net.

Nice, but I feel it could use more contrast.

Great sports photography shot. This represents the theme of 'play' well because all 4 atheletes are focused directly on the ball. This shows that all their heads are in the game. You did a good job of freezing the play at the right moment. Sometimes a little bit of blur can be the key to good action shots, but the fact that the girls are frozen in mid air gives the photo a dynamic quality.

Good vball grab, you did well battling the usual crummy cave lighting that is a high school gym. Looks like an unsuccessful middle hit play, probably due to a not-so-great set (considering the setter is running into the hitter).
