Critique club

Hi my name is Kari from the critique club

First impression
What a bright and vivacious shot.

Subject
This definately meets the challenge, even I have heard of this song.

Compositon
This is the area I think that could really do with some improvement. The angle that the shot is taken is not that interesting- from the perspective that if taken from the front there would be faces and more to keep the interest of the viewer. I know that this may not have been possible - so this is well done with the shot you have taken.

Also, this is a large group of people if you had been able to alter the DOF to focus on just one or two this may also have helped the viewer to focus in on the shot.

Technicals
I think that working the DOF may have helped .. This shot is also quite dark - by altering the brightness up slightly this may have given a less dark impression - another way is by working the curves to slightly being up the lightness in the shot.

Also, since they are obviously playing that would account for the slightly soft focus which is fine.

Improving the score
Above there are a number of suggestions .. even have a go with the orginal shot through the editing that you are able to do to achieve some of these changes ... and see how that makes the shot improve.

Final words[\b]
I like what you were trying to achieve and think that you were most the way there. Good work.

Any questions on the critique feel free to PM me.

Kari

Hi

I am Kari from the critique club.

First Impression
I think that this is a lovely and delicate shot, which really does enhance the persons stage of life and pregnancy.

Subject
This meets the challenge and does so well, you can see how the single light source just plays along the shape of this lady.

Composition
This is fantastic .. I don't know how to improve. You have a picture that not only works the thirds lines o nthe vertical where the lady is sitting, but creates a line through behind the model and maintains the interest through the continuation of the netting.

Technicals
My only issue is one that has been bought up in your comments, and that is the area in the left hand courner from the light you used. This may have been caused through having the light source too close to the background ... so just having a slight space there may have helped. I had something similar on one of my shots and playing with the curves and contrast helped this, but I am not sure it would benefit the whole picture.

improving the score
There really wasn't a lot in the scoring but I think you may have scored higher without that area on the left which several people have found distracting. I am not sure what else I can offer.

Final words
I think that this is a fantastic shot .. and shows that you have a superb eye. I am sure there are many fantastic shots to come. Well done.

Hi

Kari from the critique club.

First impression

I think that you have a very still animal and are so lucky for this shot. This is an interesting interpretation on the title.

Subject
I am sure this meets the challenge, going from the comments you have recieved ... I wasn't around back when and didn't really get into their songs .. so I think this is a job well done.

Composition
Just a slight more space on the left and the honey would have been pouring down the vertical thirds line. The dogs eye also seems very centered in the shot ... so adding this space and perhaps the dogs tags into the shot would have taken this feeling away. The dog himself though creates a nice leading line taking the eye up to the honey dripping down. I wonder how it would have looked if it was mirrored to take the eye through to the right side of the picture rather than the left.

Technicals
This are you have exceeded in. You have an incredibly sharp picture with good focus, down to the slight catchlight in the dogs eye.

Improving the score
Remove all pet shot haters from the voting pool (just an idea). I think that trying different crops may have been the idea here. That is not to say that this is not a good shot in the first place.

Finals
This is a really good shot ... well done

[bold]Critique Club Comment[/bold]

Hi my name is Kari from the Critique Club. Welcome to DPC and your first challenge ... I don't have my normal template but will work through the picture and the pros and cons with you.

My first impression of this shot is that there is a little much going on. It is slightly difficult for the eye to focus on a single point without being distracted by everything else that is happening.

This shot defiantely meets the challenge ... it uses a single source of light and is well lit in that.

The acutal composition is busy. I am not sure what you were aiming for as there are no photographers comments, these are helpful when critiquing for telling people what the aim of the shot was and giving them a foundation to comment on. I think with the type of flower you have choosen, in that there are many petals, it may have benefited from just having a single flower in the shot. The depth of field (achieved through the aperture settings) would be good if this was the case, as it stands the front flower is outside the DOF, therefore is blurred and this detracts from the back flower.

You have worked well towards the rule of thirds with the back flowers centre being on both the vertical and horizontal thirds lines.

The lighting and technicals I will deal with now. I think that you have lit the flowers from the right side, as there is a small area of flare where the camera has no data for the shot (this is the white area in the petals towards the back) ... by changing the angle of the light source this can be avoided.

You may improve the scoring potential of this shot through going down to one flower, changing the DOF ...and possibly through changing the angle of the light source... giving one all all of these a shot may create a crisper image that will score better.

In wrap up I think you have done fantastic with your first entry and know that you will be creating many more interesting entries to come.

If you have any questions about the critque feel free to PM me.

Cheers

Kari

This is a really small picture, and would benefit from having the size maximised to 640 on the long side, this would increase the impact of the image.
